Alien creator H.R. Giger has passed away.

http://www.swissinfo.ch/eng/i.html?cid=38569780&sb=twi

The renowned Swiss artist H.R. Giger has died at the age of 74, as a result of injuries sustained in a fall, Swiss public television, SRF, has reported. Giger was most famous for the alien monster he created for the movie of the same name.

SRF cited family sources. In the art world, Giger, who focused during his career on the fantastic realism and surrealistic genres, is best known for his contribution to the film Alien. The monster he created for Ridley Scott’s film earned him an Oscar for special effects in 1980.

His talent for scaring movie audiences was repeated in Poltergeist 2 (1986), Alien 3 (1992) and Species (1995). Computer game fans were able to enjoy his work in Dark Seed in 1995.

His film work was just one facet of his talent, though. Giger is also known for his sculptures, paintings and furniture.

He leaves a giant biomechanical penis-shaped hole in the art world. RIP and thanks for the interesting dreams.

RIP. I hope you don't come across anything even closely resembling your work in your next plane of existence, sir.

Damn. He was one of a kind with his work. One could tell when there was his influence in other artists' work but you could always pick out Giger. His imagination was fascinating.

Re: Alien creator H.R. Giger has passed away.

I was a teen when I bought an album by Emerson Lake & Palmer called "Brain Salad Surgery." I was captivated by the music and the album artwork. It was so unique, so unsoundly.

A few years later "Alien" became one of my favorite movies of all time. It was about this time I discovered he did both the album cover and created the alien creature.

Such a genius creating visions of dreams and nightmares.

I read this last night just before bed and it had not been confirmed at that time. Sad to wake up to the confirmed news.

Weirdly enough I was just looking through my copy of:

So much for my dream of a reboot of the Darkseed computer games.

I'm sure the sleeve was much better than the movie:

I would've liked to have seen a movie made using some of his more adult artwork. Maybe a sci-fi movie that would garner an NC-17.

A reboot of Species, with a balls-out horror director (Rob Zombie, Eli Roth or Alexandre Aja), and with Giger involved to the extent that Alan Lee and John Howe were involved in LoTR? I think that would have been incredible.

Was he the artist that did that Dead Kennedy's LP insert that caused all the fuss?

Yes he was. Inside of Frankenchrist was a poster of Landscape #XX aka Penis Landscape. Jello Biafra had to fight charges of distributing porn to minors.

I still have my 18 inch Alien from 1978 displayed. Alien is one of the few perfect films and I think I will watch it tonight.
