I can't wait to see/hear this thunderous Dolby Atmos - I remember the flawed 1998 version advertised that some theaters upgraded more subwoofers for that engagement. AMC Tyson's ETX screen has amazing, low... low bass, that rattles the seats, floors and legs

Just got back from seeing it again. Completely full theater, with an appreciative audience. I am surprised at how quickly the film moves at 2 hours. Was able to pay better attention to the MUTOS designs this time.

Re: Godzilla (Edwards, 2014) — The Reviews Thread
Ending up Seeing it in 3D tonight at our local Carmike Theater. Picture was flat and sound was not good. Luckily I will be seeing tomorrow in 3D in a nice theater. Excited about because the visuals are pretty incredible.
I have been super excited for this movie for a long long time. My expectations were probably too high because while I loved it. I was alittle disappointed in the monster fights. Too little and hard to see. The best one seemed to be the Hawaii Fight but all we got to see was clips on a tv screen.
I did love the designs of the Mutos. They looked sweet. Godzilla looked amazing as well as the Atomic Breath...oh man. Besides Bryan cranston the humans were that great, was alittle bummed about that. But still, The fights were sweet. The destruction was beautiful. I did like the slow steady build up to the final fight. Pretty epic. I just want more!

Don't ask me to reveal my sources, because I won't. But I have it on good authority that after seeing Godzilla, Guillermo Del Toro has decided to formally announce his retirement from filmmaking.

Real quick thoughts:
Saw it on IMAX 3D with a appreciative crowd who cheered and clapped for each and every monster moneyshot (not the pervy kind, heh).
A grade of B or 3 stars for the monster-on-monster action.
A grade of C+ or 2.5 stars for the puny human subplots.

Loved Godzilla and much of the effects. Liked the Cranston stuff and to be honest the movie would have been better without his son. Some deeply dumb plot elements and too little fear of the monsters, but I still liked it quite a bit. If they had removed all or most of the military elements in the middle and used the scientists in kind of like a Crichton mode, and jettisoned the son completely it could have been a great film. None of these things seemed to bother the crowd they loved it. Look forward to the next one. Definitely a two grade movie:
Plot: C- (first third was solid B+)
Godzilla A+

Just got back from an IMAX screening. As disaster movies fare, this is better than most. As a Godzilla movie, it's stellar, once you get past the first half of the movie.

Just got back from Godzilla. It was fun. I think Pacific Rim did the whole giant monster genre WAAAAAAAAY better than G. Granted, this is the first of a re-imagined franchise, so I'm going to assume the potential sequels will be much better. The critics were right, for the most part,

Re: Godzilla (Edwards, 2014) — The Reviews Thread
Saw this tonight in IMAX and really liked it more than I was expecting. After years of hype, I dialed down my expectations a bit after reading some early reviews.
Aside from the original '54 film and a handful of those that followed, a strong human element has never been a staple of the series. The story of the Ford family here was passable, though there was a lot of bad/lazy writing in there. But I never thought it was as bad as some are making it out to be.
ATJ, to me, did a fine job of playing a soldier. I get that he dismantles bombs, but not everyone needs to be a rocket scientist. He seemed like a Joe Six Pack kind of guy with maybe not too much up top outside of his military training. We needed a lead man on the ground to give the film a proper scale, in addition to moving the action, too, and he got the job done.
Cranston was great. Overdid it a bit once or twice, but he brought the gravitas.
Watanabe and Hawkins are essentially playing Dr. Exposition and Ms. Information because neither are integral to the story in an meaningful way, but we need to know things about Godzilla and, so, there they are.
Speaking of which, his origin was glossed over so quickly via the opening credits that it had me wishing they would've lost some of the second act and spent more time explaining Godzilla's origins. It would've been great to see more of the military nuking him, maybe fighting a bit.
Godzilla looked and sounded amazing. I'm really in love with this design. They nailed it. And the atomic breath was so killer. Got a big response from the crowd. Watching the tail charge up, I knew what was coming and I couldn't stop smiling.
I dug all the little shots and bits with G leading up to his major face time in the third act. Once they start showing him off, and the MUTOs start fighting him, you get plenty of monster porn. Would more have been better? Of course. I can't get enough. But for what we got, it felt very very satisfying.
I hope this does well enough to warrant a sequel. Edwards did a fantastic job grounding this film but maintaining some of the better sci-fi elements. Now that he's made a film that teases G throughout, hopefully a sequel can really show him off. I can't wait to see this again.

Saw it tonight at the Cinerama Dome. I really liked it. Yes, there are things I could nitpick (not quite enough time spent on Big G really doing his thing, Elisabeth Olsen does literally nothing the whole movie, lead guy always happens to be at the right place at the right time for every action sequence), but these are pretty minor niggles when you look at the overall impact the film has. Cranston is great, the lead actor was better than I expected from the ads, and Godzilla versus the MUTOs was just fantastic.
The only real complaint I have is that I wish they had shown Godzilla eating the MUTOs after killing them, since he's repeatedly referred to as an alpha predator, because it currently looks like he's hunting them for absolutely no reason, or perhaps specifically to save humanity, and while Godzilla has frequently been an outright protagonist in the Toho series, it felt out of place here.
That aside, this is a rock solid film that should wash away all memory of the 1998 abortion, and is easily a contender for one of the best entries in the entire Godzilla franchise.
I'm ready for the sequel, that's for damn sure.

If by lead guy you mean the guy played by actor Aaron Taylor-Johnson, I'm not surprised. I haven't seen this yet, but after watching Kick-Ass then seeing him in Savages, I knew this guy had range. Anyway, can't wait to see this when it gets the Supermallet seal of approval.

I dont understand the praise for this movie. Yes, once Godzilla shows up the movie gets exciting and it makes you leave the theater on a high point. What it makes you forget is that you just sat through an hour+ of an awful movie. Sad but true. Its worth the extra money seeing it in IMAX, but I wish the majority of their releases werent always in 3D.

I'm seeing this tonight but I did read the Godzilla Awakenings graphic novel which is a prequel of sorts and it sort of glosses over the origins as well. I never got the sense that Godzilla hunts the MUTOs for food in the book although that would make sense since he's referred to as an alpha predator. I'm not really big on the "Godzilla has always existed" origin either. I much prefer that man created the monster.

Re: Godzilla (Edwards, 2014) — The Reviews Thread
Godzilla did pretty good numbers last night! Better then expected.
" Godzilla is a monster with late-night grosses tallying a sizeable $9.3M on more than 3,400 screens, coming in much bigger than expected. Of that number, $2.1M came from IMAX screens. In comparison, Captain America: The Winter Soldier had a late-night tally of $10.2M and went on to gross $96.2M in its opening weekend."
