Biblical Epics

Who else here likes to watch the old biblical epic movies like Ten Commandments? I know they're wildly inaccurate a lot of the time, but just taken as entertainment, they're a lot of fun. At least, I think so. Like I mentioned, Ten Commandments is probably my favorite of the bunch. Though, Robe and Last Temptation Of Christ are really good as well. What are some of your favorites?

Ancient Egypt is one of my favorite historical periods, so I enjoy Ten Commandments.

Although not Biblical, Ben Hur is my favorite.

Ben Hur is my favorite movie, tied with Jaws and a couple others.

I second Jaws.

I also like Jesus (1978) and Jesus of Nazareth, some of the stories in "The Bible" Miniseries.

P.S. - when are they going to put Jesus of Nazareth on blu-ray.

Ben Hur is an amazing piece of art. It's up there in my favorites, as well. The bible series was great, though greatly off in a few spots. It's definitely worth a watch every now and then.

I like almost all of them, even the worst. My favorites of the genre include:

The Ten Commandments (1956)
Ben-Hur (1959)
The Bible: In the Beginning... (1966)
The Story of Ruth (1960)

I also like:
David and Bathsheba (1951)
The Greatest Story Ever Told (1965)
Jesus Christ Superstar (1973)
The Last Temptation of Christ (1988)
The Passion of The Christ (2004)
Samson and Delilah (1949)
Life of Brian (1979)
and others...

I even like The Prodigal (1955) and The Silver Chalice (1954), supposedly one of the worst Biblical films made.

Ben-Hur, Temptation, and Passion are pretty damn good.

I have always had a fondness for The Robe and its sequel, Demetrius and the Gladiators.

Mod note: Seems to be more about movies than specifically about DVDs so I'm moving it to Movie Talk

Sure, Quint is
Spoiler:
Christ
, with Brody and Hooper as

Peter and John
, although Catholics and Protestants argue over which is which.

I don't know if JAWS is Biblical, but E.T. certainly is.

Ben-Hur is probably my favorite as well, although it's just 'borderline' Biblical.

I could never get into The Ten Commandments, for whatever reason...I think I just came to it too late - had I seen it more as a kid, I might be more fond of it.

BARABBAS (1962) with Anthony Quinn and Jack Palance is pretty good. The final scene was shot during an eclipse of the sun. There wasn't any scenery left by the end, since those two chewed had it all. Why did nobody cast them in a western together, esp. an Italian western? They both played Attila the Hun, but in different movies.

How about a non-epic un-preachy low budget neo-realist biblical film made by a gay marxist atheist with non-actors that is pure magic :

L' Inchiesta (The Inquiry) - Is one I remember enjoying. It is about an investigator from Rome being sent to Palestine to look into rumors of a convicted criminal coming back from the dead. There was a remake in '06 w/ Dolph Lundgren that I didn't think was as good though.

That sounds like a good one. I just wish it didn't cost a hundred dollars and wasn't region 2.

Re: Biblical Epics

I like

Ben Hur
The Robe
Ten Commandments
The Nativity Story

The Greatest Story Ever told is a strange one. Yes, it's got the jarring star cameos that don't really work, and it's also got this strange, slightly cold and distant vibe to the whole thing---which I kind of like. Von Sydow is excellent, and it's got some of the most amazing cinematography ever put on film, IMO.
