Lionsgate has tapped “Me and Earl and the Dying Girl” actor R.J. Cyler as the Blue Ranger for its upcoming “Power Rangers” movie.
The studio made the announcement Friday on Twitter and Instagram.
He’s the fourth actor cast for the movie, following Naomi Scott as the Pink Ranger, Dacre Montgomery as the Red Ranger and Ludi Lin as the Black Ranger. Cyler played the titular Earl in “Me and Earl and the Dying Girl” opposite Thomas Mann and Olivia Cooke.
Dean Israelite is directing the movie from a script by Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz. Haim Saban, Brian Casentini and Allison Shearmur are producing.
The story reimagines the origins of the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, a group of high school kids given extraterrestrial powers who unite to save the world.
The 1993 Fox Kids TV series became a pop culture phenomenon and inspired a big-screen adaptation, “Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie,” in 1995.
Lionsgate and Saban Brands announced plans last year to develop and produce a live-action movie based on Saban’s Power Rangers property as the first film in a franchise.
“Power Rangers” hits theaters on Jan. 13, 2017.

And if you saw ME AND EARL AND THE DYING GIRL, you'd know he's a terrible actor, too. What, the guy who starred in DOPE wasn't available?
I wish they'd let the casting directors for the TV show cast this. They manage to get it right almost every season.

Also I'd guess that casting is casting as a generality. But film and TV are different. Casting somebody for a film can be different from casting for TV.

Casting for the TV show is now basically "Do you live in New Zealand? Do you know any martial arts?" The closest thing they've had to a high-profile star is the Mohawk guy from Mad Max 2. I watched that show religiously as a kid, acting skills were never its highest priority. Apparently Judd Lynn is back this year though!

BTW, on today's episode of PR Dino Charge, "Rise of a Ranger" (seen on Nickelodeon, 12 Noon, EST), they introduced a seventh ranger. I believe it's the first time there've been seven rangers in an episode at one time. Excellent episode, too, and it's repeated tomorrow morning at 8AM (EST).

Re: Lionsgate / Saban To Reboot Power Rangers As Movie Franchise
The casts for the TV series have been great for most of the 21st Century. The cast for PR Megaforce and Super Megaforce was one of the best in years and the current cast of PR Dino Charge is excellent. There's a certain aura PR cast members have when the chemistry is right that I find really compelling. The cast members for the movie, as announced in previous posts, don't seem to have that same aura or vibe. I fear that something will be missing. And my hopes were further shattered when they cast the clown from ME AND EARL. He was terrible in that and I can't imagine he'll be any better in this movie.
