but IMO there can be no other choice but

Oh, my, a thousand times yes.

Palance was also great in Barabbas & Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde. That evil laugh and menacing voice sends chills up & down your spine.

And Mitchum has been mentioned before for Cape Fear & Night of the Hunter but deserves another shout. His rendition of Max Cady is still one of the most sadistic, menacing, evil, realistic portrayals of a despicable sociopath ever committed to film A complete animal...and in a day when censorship restrained quite a bit on screen. DeNiro's portrayal pales in comparison, IMHO.

Cagney usually played a good guy, but he was memorable in Public Enemy (grapefruit, anyone?) & White Heat. Guy had range.

I almost wish I saw it in theaters now so I knew what people were talking about with that. On blu-ray his voice was cartoonishly clear.

Gosh how could I forget JT Walsh? He was such an ass in Good Morning Vietnam and a real creepo in Sling Blade.

And as Brother Justin in Carnivale. Remembered him from Shawshank Redemption and hated him immediately, and then thought he might be a good guy, and then decided he was a very bad man... He was absolutely awesome in Carnivale.
