The only thing I really hated about Prometheus was how stupid everybody was. Is that what they mean? Or do they mean more Engineer-based stuff?

Having seen the movie, and its many imitations. There’s no novelty to it. it’s still a handsome film, but it simply cannot be as effective.
We are afraid of the unknown. When it is known, it’s not as scary. This movie was meant to be scary above all.

I like that some are already calling this the "biggest disappointment" of the summer...but, honestly, how many were actually expecting this to be great? To me, it's more like "expectations have been met." I was expecting this to be "meh."

"This entry feels vital, freshly thought out and keen to keep us on our toes right up to the concluding scene." - Todd McCarthy
"Alien: Covenant seethes with self-importance yet is never boring or portentous. It can't come close to matching the greatness of the first two films in the series, but at least Scott seems to understand that these movies thrive on ambition." - Village Voice
"Scott has effectively created a satisfying hybrid of Alien, Prometheus and even James Cameron's Aliens." - Edward Douglas
"A return to the dark, primal and transgressive terrors of the original movie." - CineVue
Seems decent enough.
IFC has been running an ad for their Alien Marathon tomorrow, which suggests what an Alien reboot could look like, at least if it were a mash-up with The Voice
...i'm so bored.

After reading the plot all I can say is Ridley Scott has lost all sense.
It reads like terrible fan fic or Lucas trying to rhyme the prequels with the OT.

I'm still looking forward to it and I'm sure I'll enjoy it, just like with Prometheus. This seems to be one of those franchises where fanboys are never entirely satisfied beyond the first two films.

If you edit out the idiot scientists and the need to run in a straight line, I also enjoy Prometheus.

No, I meant your comment about fanboys unwilling to like any subsequent film in the series that's not Alien or Aliens.
That's an argument that can be made of Alien 3, which was well directed, well-acted, etc. but not the finale that fans wanted. Still an excellent film in its own right. The same can't be said of the following sequels.

Yeah, not sure i'd attribute it to fanboys since the quality of movies has definitely been a step down. Some more significant then others.
But hey, I liked Prometheus too. It wasn't great or amazing, but I liked it overall.

Is anyone still planning to come to Portland to watch this with me? If not I won't bother seeing it until it hits cable.

If you count Alien vs. Predator and Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem I enjoy the former but not the latter so much. So of the films I really only dislike two.

It's easier to forgive the mistakes of a filmmaker who doesn't keep running off at the mouth. Fincher and Juenet didn't make perfect films, but they made the films and let them be. Neither necessarily liked the movie that made it to the screen, but they shut up and let me enjoy what I could.
Prometheus had potential and does have some good enjoyable components. But when you keep swinging your dick around and carrying on in inane ramblings ... Well, you better deliver. Scott has not.
Does Blomkamp excite me? Honestly, no. The idea of a new director with some passion for the project is what excited me.

I'm in PDX, but I still can feel the residual disappointment from Prometheus years ago. I'm not sure I'm going to bother with this one in theaters.

From the reviewers I follow, I'll probably like this. I liked Prometheus and I love Alien. Sounds like if you hate Prometheus you won't like this. I've seen all the Alien movies in the theater so that won't change. Probably won't spring for IMAX, though.
