Zorro reboot on the way
EXCLUSIVE: Sony Pictures is crossing swords with Chris Boal, signing the playwright and scribe to reboot its Zorro franchise. The reboot has been a Sony priority for some time, and the studio has Parkes/MacDonald’s Walter Parkes and Laurie MacDonald producing it. They are also spearheading the studio’s reboot of Men In Black. Lauren Abrahams is overseeing it for Sony. I’m told that the ambition of the movie is less traditional swashbuckler, and more of a Dark Knight-style unveiling of the character with a new backstory, gritty realism and emotional core. There will be swordplay, combined with the martial arts that came from Europe and created a deadly combination of action and lethal fighting systems that combined swords, daggers, grappling and bare knuckles. Boal was a competitive fencer on the national circuit before becoming a writer. He just adapted the sci-fi novel Old Man’s War for Paramount and producer Scott Stuber and Wolfgang Petersen, the Viking pic Vanguard for Warner Bros and Atlas for Alexander Skarsgaard to star, and Caesar for Warner Bros and Thunder Road. He’s repped by CAA, Madhouse Entertainment and attorney Sean Marks. |

That sounds terrible.

Re: Zorro reboot on the way
Jean Dujardin would make an excellent Zorro.

I am, how do you say... ah yes, not very interested based on that description. |
Re: Zorro reboot on the way
So it's basically another clueless attemp like when they wanted to make a sci-fi Zorro reboot. Pass.
Just give Banderas and Zeta-Jones sacks of money and make a third one. |
Re: Zorro reboot on the way
I'd rather have a sequel to Zorro The Gay Blade.

Re: Zorro reboot on the way
In this one Michael B Jordan is gonna play Zorro. Black, white, latino he can do it all. I think his next film after this is a new remake of the Charlie Chan films.

Christopher Nolan has killed all comic book whimsy.

Re: Zorro reboot on the way
Yeah, cast a white guy as Zorro. That'll go over really well.

Re: Zorro reboot on the way
Getting tired of the 'reboots' that retell the origin story...especially when it happens every decade or so (here's looking at you, Spider-Man).
Seems that we either get the 'grim & gritty' treatment or the 'dumb comedy treatment' (Green Hornet). Used to be that there was some assumption that audiences were familiar with the character (or could catch up...Tarzan, Sherlock Holmes, etc.). I can understand 'reboots' when a character has been mishandled from the original incarnations (Tarzan), but is it really necessary to reacquaint every new generation with iconic characters such as Superman? Is it necessary to see every director's vision of a character requiring tweaks to the origin story? How about Black Zorro? Female Zorro? One-armed Zorro? At least those would be intriguing. Although one-armed Z might need to wear a prosthetic arm in one incarnation to avoid detection of the secret identity. |

Yep. If we couldn't even get a Superman without angst, no chance of getting one with Zorro.

Christopher Nolan has killed all comic book whimsy. Did you already forget what whimsy Joel Schumacher brought to Batman Forever and Batman and Robin? |
Re: Zorro reboot on the way
Maybe if Zorro Reborn is a big hit we will finally get that Zorro Vs Godzilla film we have always wanted.

You know what had TONS of "whimsy"? Those Fantastic Four movies... and Catwoman. You could even make an argument for Ghost Rider or X3. |
Re: Zorro reboot on the way
This has Lone Ranger written all over it.
