They had me at Karen Gillan

The horror film Oculus stars Karen Gillan and Brenton Thwaites as siblings who discover that a cursed 300-year-old mirror may have killed their parents. Katee Sackhoff and Rory Cochrane co-star. Mike Flanagan directed from a script he co-wrote with Jeff Howard, based on a previous short film.

Doesn't look very good, but it was pretty wild to hear Gillan talk with an American accent.

I saw Oculus as part of the Midnight Midnight Programme during the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival. Terrific film, and I highly recommend seeing it.

She seems to be doing a pretty good job of it too.

I don't really dig most of the new horror movies, but Gillan is enough to get me to watch this one.

Granted it's only 9 reviews, but they have all been glowing. 100% on RT so far.

It must be pretty good, considering that Facebook saw fit to buy the distribution rights.

If I'm not mistaken I believe WWE Studios & Relativity Media only picked up this film for distribution. It was originally released by Intrepid Pictures.

WWE Films seems to love Canada right now, as I believe the Soska Sisters are working on 'See No Evil 2'.

Sounds like the name of a contest. My daughter has been bugging me to see this when it comes out so we will likely see it next weekend.

European actors and actresses really seem to excel at accents.

I've heard some that can't pull it off well.

They pretty much have too if they want to cross over into American film. There isn't quite as much demand to go the other way.

This is even playing at the local ArcLight theaters here, so looks like it got a nice distribution push. I think I reviewed Absentia and it was mediocre due to the budget or lack thereof. I hear this one is much better and has a decent budget.

Re: OCULUS (April 2014) S: Karen Gillan, Katee Sackhoff, Brenton Thwaites

Saw it earlier in the day. For the most part, I enjoyed it. I think that the playing around with timelines near the end kind of hurt it a bit, but that wasn't a major deal breaker.

This is actually based on a short that director Mike Flanagan did back in 2006. Kind of interesting to learn that. Here is the trailer for that one...

Re: OCULUS (April 2014) S: Karen Gillan, Katee Sackhoff, Brenton Thwaites

I thought this was an average horror film - a few good jumps and good atmosphere. I felt like the plot let a lot of things just drop (such as the
Spoiler:
dogs - I mean it was said that all these dogs vanished but we only got a glimpse of their own dog running by. I would have liked to see a few others with the spooky eyes

Also, I understand the motivation of the main female, and her prep to make sure the fates of the victims didn't happen to her as well, but (IMO) something just seemed to be missing as everything started to happen.

And there was never really
Spoiler:
any explanation as to why the mirror was doing what it was.
Guess that is saved for a sequel?

Re: OCULUS (April 2014) S: Karen Gillan, Katee Sackhoff, Brenton Thwaites

I thought the movie was mediocre despite having a few good scares. I felt that
Spoiler:
they really convoluted the story and made it a jumbled mess by jumping back and forth. Were they reliving these moments and having them shown to them once again or simply reminiscing as they walked through the house? Was the demon/spirit/trapped soul(s) showing each of them what it wanted them to see or remember? Also, it is a little hard to believe that their old house would be readily available to them to do their little experiment in the first place.
