Titanic winning best picture was the lowest point in my book. Visually stunning but not a very good movie overall.

Voted for Gravity. I actually didn't think that highly of 12 Years. Wolf of Wall Street is probably my favorite, but I know that won't win.

To each their own, but for me it was the best movie nominated that year that connected with people. L.A. Confidential, while great, just didn't have that movie magic that Titanic exuded. The most original movie? No, but at least I cared about the characters (unlike Gladiator).

Not on the same level as slavery obviously but isn't the message of Gravity partially that mankind is not only fucking up the Earth with pollution but is doing the same to space? Maybe that message doesn't matter as much since most people don't care enough about the planet they live on let alone space.

I still don't get the love for The Insider. I've never seen a film where so many of the scenes said the exact same thing. It basically went like this:

Big tobacco's doing something bad
Big tobacco's doing something bad
Big tobacco's doing something bad
Big tobacco's doing something bad and I should tell someone
Big tobacco's doing something bad and you should tell us
Big tobacco's doing something bad but I can't tell you
Big tobacco's doing something bad but I can't tell you
Big tobacco's doing something bad and you should tell us
Big tobacco's doing something bad but I can't tell you
Big tobacco's doing something bad okay I'll tell you
I miss my kids
I miss my kids
I miss my kids
I miss my kids
Big tobacco's doing something bad and we've got to tell people
Big tobacco's doing something bad and the network won't let us tell people
Big tobacco's doing something bad and the network won't let us tell people
Big tobacco's doing something bad and the network won't let us tell people

ad infinitum.

I've seen Gravity three times and it never occurred to me that there was any message like that. Never seen or heard it mentioned anywhere before, either.

Yeah, I never got that either. Why can't Gravity's message just be never stop fighting for your survival or never give up hope?

that's my thinking too.

while I found 'American Hustle' highly entertaining. 'Gravity' though was just visually and sonically amazing.

'12 Years' was an emotional roller coaster of a film, but at times the intimate violence was just really hard to watch, not that it's a negative - but it's a pretty hardcore drama.

I thought the message was, women belong on the ground serving coffee to the technicians, not up in space where they're bound to fuck everything up and kill everybody.

I still haven't seen GRAVITY but a friend of mine, a science journalist, found it funny that in order to create enough drama around Sandra Bullock and keep her afloat long enough to sustain an entire movie they had to destroy the entire space program!

I haven't seen it but I thought that the space pollution aspect was supposed to be a pretty big part of the film. Maybe it's not the message of the film but I've heard quite a few people bring that up in the discussions about the film. The overall message I assume is about survival but I would think it's kind of raising awareness about that too. I might be off base though with my line of though.

I never thought about any environmental message from Gravity either.

I think 12 Years a Slave will win. Rightfully so. Best picture of the year.

Loved Gravity but I would say my favorite of the year was Her. Great story and so well done.

Re: What will win Best Picture? (2014)

I've now seen everything except Dallas Buyers Club.

Wolf of Wall Street was hands down the most entertaining of all the movies for me, but everyone seems to agree it has no chance for a number of reasons.

I enjoyed Gravity and found the ending moving. I had some problems with 12 Years A Slave, but would be happy with either of those winning over American Hustle. Anything but American Hustle is fine by me. I think it is on the same level as past best picture winners like Gladiator or A Beautiful Mind.

Re: What will win Best Picture? (2014)

Seen them all now that I saw Philomena a couple days ago, 12 Years a Slave is the most deserving certainly even if its not my personal fav. Honestly though it looks as though its a tossup between it and Gravity which is a shame as its excellence comes from its special effects and not its story.
