I'd have to agree. There hasn't been a consistent movie comedy writer in the last 30 years except for HR. And except for Monty Python and the Holy Grail and Ted, my favorite movie comedies have been written by him. That's quite spectacular if you ask me.

Watched National Lampoon's Vacation last night from the 4-Vacation set I bought from the UK. Weird. Honestly, don't know what prompted me to watch that last night, but when I saw the set, I had to watch the first one.

He will be missed. Hollywood lost an icon.

He was so great in Stripes. Love his part at 1:07 with John Candy. His facial expressions never cease to crack me up.

Bill Murray: "Harold Ramis and I together did the National Lampoon Show off Broadway, Meatballs, Stripes, Caddyshack, Ghostbusters and Groundhog Day. He earned his keep on this planet. God bless him."

Dan Aykroyd: "Deeply saddened to hear of the passing of my brilliant, gifted, funny friend, co-writer/performer and teacher Harold Ramis. May he now get the answers he was always seeking."

Rick Moranis: "Today is a sad day. RIP Harold."

Ivan Reitman: "The world has lost a wonderful, truly original, comedy voice with the passing of Harold Ramis. He possessed the most agile mind I’ve ever witnessed. He always had the clearest sense of what was funny and how to create something in a new clever way. He was very generous about making everyone around him look better and smarter. Harold had an extraordinary impact on my career and I loved him like a brother. My heart goes out to his children, and his lovely wife, Erica. He will be profoundly missed.”

I always thought Harold was Canadian. I guess I just assumed all the SCTV people were. He was born in Chicago.

Almost forgot about his role as Seth Rogen's dad in Knocked Up. His scenes were great in that.

Re: Harold Ramis Dead at 69

Stephen Tobolowsky (Ned Ryerson from Groundhog Day) happened to be doing an AMA on Reddit today and was asked about his memories of Ramis:

A few professional memories:

In the audition for Groundhog Day, I read with Harold Ramis and he said "Be as broad as you want. You're the spice in the stew. Bill is the stew." That's when I started attacking Harold as Ned Ryerson in the room. I almost took off his pants. That's when he said "Okay, okay! Not that broad."

Harold Ramis one day took me aside and said "Being an actor is impossible. You need four heroes in your life to succeed as an actor." What he meant was that you need help from four unlikely sources to succeed. It's too hard to do it on your own. You need help coming from where you don't expect it, like four Gandalfs riding over the hill on his white charger. Of course, Harold didn't know it at the time but he was one of my heroes.

We were filming the scene when Bill punched me. Harold said "Well, we have the camera set up here. How do you want to do it?" And I said "Well, do you want me to just stop spinning when I see the courthouse?" And he said "You can do that?" And I said "Yeah, I'm just going to stop when you tell me to stop."

He said, "You do whatever you want. Because comedy lives in the two-shot."

Finally, one personal memory.

We were at a party in the mountains in Malibu, Harold once pull out his guitar and played a new song he had written. It was so beautiful, so filled with joy. It almost felt like that was the real him.

Besides being a phenomenal actor and a great comedic director, he had something people don't have usually. And that's courage. He was brave. He was brave as an actor, he was brave as a director, and he was brave as a writer. That's the impression I had of him. As a man of enormous courage.

This celeb death hit me harder than any has in probably a decade or more. The guy really had some incredible talent and some stunning hair as well.

Truly one of the all-time greats, no exaggeration. He easily goes up on the Mount Rushmore of comedy of the last 50 years with John Hughes.

I totally forgot he directed Vacation, and was a writer on Animal House. He was pretty much attached in someway to almost every classic comedy of the late 70's/early 80's that I can remember.

I still say that period was the golden age of comedy as most of those comedies really aged well.

Re: Harold Ramis Dead at 69

Ramis was usually my favorite character in the movies in which he acted, probably because he was willing to play the straight man to more scene-chewing actors who got the focus (and the acclaim). He was like Wayne Rogers in M*A*S*H* (tv). Said a lot about his lack of egotism and care for the finished product. Makes me think of Richard Benjamin as actor/director.

Nice touch as a director, especially in the difficult comedy genre. His contributions as writer, actor, and director will be remembered.
