Everything is double-awesome now. Warner Bros. announces on Friday the sequel to 'The Lego Movie' will be out on May 26, 2017.
The minds behind the animated hit The Lego Movie are building another movie about the toy bricks.
Warner Bros. studios announced Friday that the new untitled Lego sequel will be released May 26, 2017.
It was almost a foregone conclusion a new film would be made after The Lego Movie has made more than $200 million in universal box office and looks to dominate the nation's box office for the third weekend in a row.
Writer-directors Christopher Miller and Phil Lord were the first to bring the popular toy to life in a major theatrical release. It was considered a gamble.
"All we do is stuff that would seem to be terrible, and we count on low expectations," Lord joked at the time of release. "And we exceed those expectations."
The filmmakers brought on board for the sequel will not have the benefit of these low expectations. Besides the box office dominance, The Lego Movie has been one of the best reviewed movies of the year.
Producer Dan Lin told USA TODAY about Lego story ideas: "There are certainly more worlds to explore."

Chris Pratt is suddenly Hollywood's "it" guy. Maybe they'll try and get him to lend a voice to this one.

he's been popping up here and there in several movies - he's (like Rob Lowell) proving he can toggle between movies and TV pretty well.
what was that movie were he was getting fat for ?

Wonder if they'll try to wrestle some rights for Marvel stuff and have a Marvel/DC type of showdown within the movie. Maybe all the franchises LEGO has dealings with will break down and say, "It's a LEGO movie, it's all meant for fun anyway."

i would say more starring power in movies than Lowe. he was good in Moneyball. what little there was of him that is. Zero Dark Thirty i remember him as well. his career is much more of an upward trajectory than Lowe and he will be done with tv very soon, i suspect.

Good call-out. paaron46. I was a little sad that there were no Marvel characters the last time around. But I imagine the legal negotiations would be a nightmare, like the short scene in "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" where Daffy Duck and Donald Duck appear together.

I wondered this in the reviews thread, but would disney even allow Star Wars in the next one (assuming that appearance got negotiated before they bought them out)? Star Wars is obviously a huge part of Lego, and Disney also has a bunch of properties with Lego (Lone Ranger, Disney Princesses, Disney Jr, etc.) but the movie is made by WB.
Also, the first movie is great as a standalone. Thankfully this should have the same creative team, but where do they go from here?

I'm still fascinated that that scene in WFRR exists at all, it must've been a legal nightmare.

There was a lot of negotiating, from what I read. In that none of them could "win" over the other, equal time, all that type of stuff.

LEGO MOVIE 2 should be the Hollywood bipartisan movie. Reach across the isle. Put everyone's title cards at the front of the movie. Imagine a Warner Bros. movie that said "In association with FOX Studios and Disney Studios".

I just want a scene of Cap yelling "Avengers Assemble!" as they literally do that.

This may be weird but I'd like to see them stumble into LEGO Friends Heartlake city. Could be quirky like Barbie popping up in Toy Story.

‘Lego Movie’ Directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller Set to Script Sequel
October 26, 2014 | 03:13PM PT Dave McNary
“The Lego Movie 2″ is gaining momentum with Phil Lord and Chris Miller signing on with Warner Bros to write and produce.
The duo wrote and directed “The Lego Movie,” which grossed over $460 million worldwide this year. Dan Lin and Roy Lee are producing with Lord and Miller, and Jill Wilfert, Matt Ashton, Chris McKay and Kara Lord Piersimoni are exec producers.
A director has not yet been selected for “The Lego Movie 2.” The studio’s Greg Silverman, Courtenay Valenti and Chris Defaria are overseeing.
Warner Bros. set the date on Oct. 16 as part of its massive slate announcement that included 10 DC titles, three Harry Potter spinoffs and three Lego spinoffs: “Ninjago” in 2016, Lego Batman in 2017 and “The Lego Movie 2″ in 2018.
“Lego Movie 2″ had originally been set for 2017, but Lego Batman has been moved into that slot.
McKay, who supervised animation on “The Lego Movie,” is directing Lego Batman from a script by Seth Grahame-Smith with Lee, Lin, Lord and Miller all returning as producers. Will Arnett will again voice the Caped Crusader, who mimicked Christian Bale’s Batman basso profundo voice in “The Lego Movie.”
“The Lego Movie” was the first project to emerge from Warner’s animation consortium. Most of the animation was produced by Australia-based Animal Logic. Lin, Lee, Miller and Lord are producing “Ninjago” with Charlie Bean directing.
News about Lord and Miller coming on board “The Lego Movie 2″ was first reported by Deadline.com.

There's already a handful of DTV Lego movies out there. Something like Ninjago and Lego Batman seems like they're screaming for a direct to video release. I'm not sure it's a good idea to try to release all these Lego movies - with the exception of A Lego Movie 2 - in theaters.
