Magic Mike XXL (D: Greg Jacobs) S: Tatum
"Steven Soderbergh has said he’s retired from directing films, so presumably he isn’t interested in handling a follow-up to his wildly successful male-stripper melodrama Magic Mike. But that doesn’t mean the project can’t happen. Over the weekend, Magic Mike star Channing Tatum (affectionately known around the Dissolve offices as “The Big Brisket”) tweeted a picture of himself in a fedora, looking pensively at a notepad while sitting next to a bust of his Magic Mike co-star Matthew McConaughey. The text of the tweet: “What better way to start writing #MagicMike2 than with my old friend Dallas? #runatribe.” Kevin P. Sullivan of MTV.com observantly notes that in the picture, Tatum is next to a poster for Soderbergh’s The Girlfriend Experience, suggesting that he’s sitting in one of Soderbergh’s offices. Does this mean the director is ready to get back behind the camera? Or that Soderbergh is planning to be the producer? (He’s said in the past that he’d consider it.) Or was Tatum just goofing around, and there’s no Magic Mike sequel in the offing at all?"
I enjoyed the first one more than I expected I would. I'm looking forward to this, as long as McConaughey is in.

I think the plan is for Tatum to actually direct this one. If anything, he's just going to Soderbergh for guidance.

Here's what Tatum had to say about MAGIC MIKE 2 back in June:
"It will be a road-trip movie, and it will essentially be the movie that everyone thought the first one was going to be: crazy and fun and less slice-of-life and less drama. The first one, we had to make not so cheesy and campy; this one we are going to swing for the fences."

Yea... I'm annoyed he's wearing a fedora while he works.

Somehow I don't think "Magic Mike 2" is a story that needs to be told.
McConaughey's got Interstellar and Sea of Trees coming up. Doubt if he's interested in doing a (probably) lame sequel without Soderbergh. He has indie cred he won't want to lose.

Yes, because Magic Mike 2 will instantly shed him of his indie cred

Hot on the heels of Joe Manganiello's informal announcement that the sequel to Steven Soderbergh's "Magic Mike" will shoot this fall, new details about the stripper dramedy have emerged. "I think they’re going to announce it soon," the actor said. And he's right.
While potential helmers to take over the directing chair for the sequel included star and original co-writer Channing Tatum and co-writer/producer Reid Carolin, sources close to the camp tell The Playlist that a filmmaker has been found: Greg Jacobs. And that the title of the sequel will be "Magic Mike XXL." Look for an “official announcement” soon, but the team behind the movie has decided on their man.
With Soderbergh remaining as an executive producer on the project, Jacobs' name comes as little surprise—he’s been the director’s right hand man and creative partner for decades. He's been Soderbergh's first AD since "King Of The Hill," acted as a producer on most of his films since "Full Frontal," and routinely performs both gigs (he was one of the producers and first AD on "Magic Mike" for example, and is an exec. producer on Soderbergh's upcoming Cinemax series "The Knick" as well). Suffice it to say, the move is keeping "Magic Mike" in house with a key member of the original team.
Jacobs directed "Criminal," the U.S. remake of Argentina's "Nine Queens" in 2004, and "Wind Chill" starring Emily Blunt in 2007. Amazon Studios recently announced "Red Oaks," a single-camera comedy that Jacobs created, wrote and is executive producing. He would have directed it himself, but with the “Magic Mike” sequel on the horizon, the reins for the pilot have been handed over to David Gordon Green, who almost directed the Soderbergh-produced adaptation of “A Confederacy Of Dunces” back in the mid-aughts before the project fell apart (see our 25 Greatest Films Never Made feature).
Most of the original stripper cast for "Magic Mike" are expected to return for the sequel, but no deals are in place and it's possible some characters are being written out of part two.

'Magic Mike' Sequel Gets Release Date
11:21 AM PDT 4/15/2014 by Rebecca Ford
Warner Bros. has dated the male stripper sequel for July 3, 2015.
Magic Mike 2 is a follow-up to the 2012 hit, which starred Channing Tatum as a male stripper, and was based on some of his real experiences. The film, which was directed by Steven Soderbergh, earned $167.2 million worldwide.
In February, Tatum tweeted a picture of himself in an old-school fedora, saying that he had started writing the film. Plans for a sequel have been discussed since the first film had such a strong performance at the box office. In 2012, Tatum said he had begun working on a concept for a follow-up with producing partner Reid Carolin, who wrote the first Magic Mike.
The film has that holiday weekend Friday to itself, but Paramount's Terminator reboot is slated for Wednesday, July 1, 2015.

Re: Magic Mike XXL (D: Greg Jacobs) S: Tatum
Tatum has dropped some details in regards to a plot. It looks as though the sequel (currently titled MAGIC MIKE XXL) will revolve around a road trip tour of stripper conventions.
Here's what Tatum had to say regarding the conventions to be in the sequel:
The women would come from miles and miles around. Then you lock the doors and you say all bets are off. It gets zany and crazy, and it's a wild ride. It's an incubator for insanity. It doesn't matter almost what you do onstage. I don't want to put anything in black and white on a page, but if you've been to one, you know how crazy it gets, and now pour kerosene on that. You've seen Magic Mike—now multiply that. Mob mentality. It's just exponentially crazier. I thought it was absolutely insane."
Also, the film will be directed by a producing partner of Soderbergh's, Greg Jacobs. In case you might be worried it wont have that "Soderbergh touch", Soderbergh will be the camera operator, director of photography and editor on the MAGIC MIKE sequel.

I hope Matthew McConaughey is in it, even for a little bit. He was great in Magic Mike, and I am not just saying that because of his dancing skills (although..).
