Re: 60s science fiction or 70s science fiction
It doesn't really work well by decade. There was a period across both decades that had all those message movies, like Alphaville, Planet of the Apes, Soylent Green, the Omega Man, Zardoz, Westworld, The Andromeda Strain, Silent Running, and Logan's Run. The same sort of cultural questioning showed up in Star Trek, but with happy endings because Kirk got to break any planetary culture that he didn't like.
Right in the middle, and not following any trends, was 2001: A Space Odyssey.
Science fiction movies were pretty much broken by Star Wars, after which producers decided that the most important thing in a science fiction movie was special effects. The result was clinkers like The Black Hole.

Re: 60s science fiction or 70s science fiction
I liked The Black Hole! One of the few movies I would like to see re-made.
The 1970s gave us Alien, Star Wars, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Superman, Mad Max, A Clockwork Orange, most of the Planet of the Apes sequels, and the first Star Trek.
Science fiction was pressed into new and exciting directions which would impact (for better or for worse) everything to come afterwards. The careers of many of our most treasured (and reviled) filmmakers started here.

Re: 60s science fiction or 70s science fiction
I don't get why some want to compare particular 0's.
There was some great stuff in both for me.
Godzillas
Mad Max
Planet of the Apes (as mentioned) and sequels
Clockwork Orange
2001
THX 1138, odd but interesting
Logan's Run
Star Wars
Close Encounters
Alien
Superman
but both had a bunch of fun campy movies (MST3K thrives on those)

Re: 60s science fiction or 70s science fiction
^I'm coming around to that notion too; but having a tougher time to reconcile with it, scifi is a big benchmark for how the eras are judged. Horror too; and not just the popular releases either.

Re: 60s science fiction or 70s science fiction
It's got robots, ray guns, and aliens playing clarinet. It also fits easily into traditional science fiction of the 1930s and 1940s.

Re: 60s science fiction or 70s science fiction
Just because of Solaris & Stalker I would pick the 70's.
Then add these :
The Man Who Fell to Earth
Rollerball
The Terminal Man
Demon Seed
Invasion Of The Body Snatchers
Slaughterhouse Five
The Stepford Wives
Time After Time

Re: 60s science fiction or 70s science fiction
Can amod add in every decade i just realized 70s are stronger than 80s actually, its really just the special effects like one poster said that got me passing that opinion.
