Star Wars ...is the franchise a joke now?

so we all know about Lucas and the sell out he is with his storied franchise...

i saw a commercial just now or what i thought was a stupid commercial using the Darth Voice for a father walking in a store with his children. he put on a phony black mask and a light bulb and the music played, etc...

cut to ad for Disney theme parks.

now, when Lucas was sparing in his use of the license (see little kid and the VW commercial, i believe) it is magical...

and i know the new movie trilogy in the works would probably make or break, most likely make Disney, yet again, but i can't help think the franchise is just a sad, pathetic joke. can i be swayed otherwise?

so is the franchise doomed or already destined to become a pop culture joke because of this melding of classic brands?

Eh, the franchise probably became a joke when George decided to make a cookie jar out of R2D2.

I believe Jar Jar was his answer to bring some serious back to the franchise.

The franchise will be a joke when it doesn't make fistfuls of money anymore, and I don't see that happening any time in the near future.

The existence of this thread is reminding me that I need to see the Christmas Special.

Re: Star Wars ...is the franchise a joke now?

The great thing about this franchise is the same people who have been calling it a joke for the last 15+ years will be the first ones in line for each new movie.

Only 15 years? If it wasn't a joke since The Return of the Jedi, then it was a joke since the Ewoks and Droids cartoons.

Re: Star Wars ...is the franchise a joke now?

I don't think it's a joke, nor would I consider it just because of extensive merchandising and pop cultural awareness.

It's not a Christmas special, it's a "Holiday Special", with the holiday in question being Life Day. And George isn't too proud of that one, but that's what makes it the best.

Star Wars? The Reagan satellite defense system? Well, it's severely outdated, so I would imagine it's considered a joke now, yes.

Re: Star Wars ...is the franchise a joke now?

I think the only people capable of making the franchise a joke are the fans. Their collective actions are what will determine if the franchise loses favor in pop culture, not Disney whoring out the characters for $$.

Wait... how the fuc....

Come on, man. Seriously?

You really think that Lucas is the reason why the star wars franchise is a shell of what it was in the 70's? Hahahhahahahaha. No, let's put it exactly who is to blame for how shitty the franchise

You suck that Boba Fett cock so much and bam, you lower the level to were we are now.

Re: Star Wars ...is the franchise a joke now?

It still astounds me HOW popular the Star Wars franchise since it really hasn't put out a great movie since Empire Strikes Back.

Now most movie franchises are profitable because of the name alone, and that spawns endless sequels, so I don't begrudge Star Wars for milking the cow. What boggles my mind is how fans continue to flock to it despite the supbar quality since 1983.

Return of the Jedi is when it started to tumble with the Ewoks & Luke/Leia sibling plot point, and continued on with the ridiculous Special Edition Changes with every new VHS/DVD/BluRay release, and we have all been down that road with whats wrong with the Prequels.

Now we have the Sequel Trilogy which will make a boat load of money too, along with possible spinoffs of Boba Fett and Han Solo? Maybe that Star Wars is just in the DNA of fans and that kind of blocks any objectivity or maybe just the name alone invokes hope of future projects?

All I know is that when the quality gets bad in most movie franchises, people usually bail in droves, but I have yet to see that happen with Star Wars.

Re: Star Wars ...is the franchise a joke now?

I think that Lucas did more damage to the series with the prequels than Disney could do to it with advertising etc. If Disney produces great quality Star Wars films in the future then i think people will be more than happy to put up with over saturation as there will be a demand.
