Russo Brothers at "an Impasse" to Direct Another Marvel Movie After Scarlett Johansson Lawsuit

Scarlett Johansson's lawsuit against The Walt Disney Company over her payments for the Black Widow movie rocked Hollywood in a big way after it was announced. Not only did a nasty back-and-forth take place between the actress' camp and the House of Mouse but it also has apparently effected Marvel Studios' ability to bring back talent into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In a report on The Wall Street Journal about the fallout of Johansson's legal filing, the outlet claims that the uncertainty the lawsuit has created has caused filmmakers Joe and Anthony Russo to think twice about returning for a new Marvel movie.

With four Marvel Studios movies under their belts (Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame), the Russo brothers seemingly departed the MCU after directing the biggest movie of all time in the 2019 feature film. The pair have frequently spoken hypothetically about returning for projects, films like an adaptation of Secret Wars and re-casting Wolverine in the MCU have been their benchmarks for coming back, but according to this report they may not want to if their bottom line is being threatened.

The Wall Street Journal wrote that since the lawsuit has been filed that the pair "hit an impasse in negotiations to direct another Marvel movie" and that the discord between talent and the studio "left them unsure how their next movie would be distributed and how they would be paid." The Russo declined to comment for the initial report.

"I keep saying Secret Wars because that was one of the first books that I really fell in love with as a kid," Joe said in an interview back in 2019 with MTV about returning to Marvel. "This notion of, you know, event storytelling, and I think that's part of the reason that we gravitate so strongly towards these event films and these ensemble films is the notion that you can contain so many different characters and so many different points of view and galvanize them around a story point is really compelling to us."

Oh no, not the Russo brothers. Marvel needs to get their ducks in a row.

They made four of the best MCU movies, hands down, but I'd like to see someone fresh come in.

Besides, the Russo Brothers really need to help Favreau and Filloni save Star Wars

Disney better get their shit together because Marvel's going to have a hard time signing talent in front of and behind the camera if this garbage with Scarlett Johansson continues. (Disney screwed her over, and other actors, directors, and writers aren't going to forget that.)

The ScarJo thing is a big black eye for the Mouse. They handled it poorly with their response, and it's not going to endear established talent to the company.

I suppose those who've "made it" already might be more willing to turn down offers, but the vast majority of talent out there would still kill for a 3-6 MCU film contract. (or to direct one) It'd be disappointing if the Russo's don't come back, but there's plenty of talented directors out there.

Feige said recently they don't do those long-haul contracts anymore. It varies from project to project and cast.

I'm sure it's a mix now that they have to do film to film for those who've played out their initial deals. But I'd be surprised if the new cast additions (like Shang Chi) aren't signing longer term deals.

And Marvel Studios staked claim to new dates in 2024 for untitled projects, on Feb. 16, May 3, July 26, and Nov. 8.

MCU Marvel Cinematic Universe General Discussion

I saw all of the posts dex14 made for us in the individual threads for the upcoming 2022/2023 Marvel Cinematic Universe films and here are the updates in one spot, in order of new premiere dates:

DOCTOR STRANGE IN THE MULTIVERSE OF MADNESS (Disney) previously dated on 3/25/22 moves to 5/6/22

THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER (Disney) previously dated on 5/6/22 moves to 7/8/22

BLACK PANTHER: WAKANDA FOREVER (Disney) previously dated on 7/8/22 moves to 11/11/22

THE MARVELS (Disney) previously dated on 11/11/22 moves to 2/17/23

ANT-MAN AND THE WASP: QUANTUMANIA (Disney) previously dated on 2/17/23 moves to 7/28/23

- - -

In other MCU general discussion, I really like Rocket Raccoon. I kind of want him in every movie now.

Tonight at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, Black Widow‘s Scarlett Johansson became the 35th recipient of the American Cinematheque Award.

Among those in attendance to pay tribute to the two-time Oscar nominee was Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige, who praised her for her “talent,” “vision”, intelligence and savvy, both as an actress and a producer, also teasing a “top secret Marvel Studios project” on which the studio is reteaming with the actress, which he said has nothing to do with her Black Widow character, Natasha Romanoff. Feige noted that Johansson, who became the first Marvel actor to exec produce one of the studio’s movies with Black Widow, will also serve on the upcoming project as a producer.

If it is "top secret" then why would you tease it? That crap always drives me nuts.

They probably want to generate advance interest, also known as 'buzz', for the project.

In this instance, probably just to say there was no bad blood between Marvel and her and they will continue to be working together.

Yes, but that didn't stop Marvel's name from being dragged through the whole thing.

Plenty of people just assumed she’d be done with them. And that’s clearly not the case.

Could have been terms of a settlement, could have been there really wasn't any bad blood. Either way, this could be good

It was business and I am glad it stayed that way.
