'Voyage of Time' (Terrence Malick doc) Oct. 2016
While it's slated for a 2014 release and imdb lists as being in post-production, this film has been in production for years and has had it's problems.
from September of this year:
Terrence Malick’s Sycamore Fires Back Against ‘Voyage Of Time’ Docu Financiers
"Cited for his idiosyncrasies almost as much as his talent as filmmaker, Malick has been working on Voyage Of Time since 2008. Narrated by Brad Pitt and possibly others, the ascent of man docu has accumulated more that 3300 minutes of raw footage from 175 shooting days around the world and several hundred pre-visual effects shots."
July article from Hollywood Reporter:
Terrence Malick Movie Investors Sue to Get Money Back
from indiewire:
Terrence Malick's Countersuit Claims 'Voyage Of Time' Being "Held Hostage" By Financiers
"Originally, Seven Seas teamed up with Sycamore in 2010 to invest $8.5 million into “Voyage of Time,” envisioned as two 45-minute IMAX documentaries and one feature film, and also described in the lawsuit as a “cosmic epic examining the history of time from the very birth of [the] universe to the final collapse back to the universe's original state.” Everything originally seemed peachy for both parties (Seven Seas' completion figure even went up to $9.3 million); but once Malick's schedule for the film was delayed, on top of Seven Seas' $3.3 million coming in well under the proposed sum—well, it's a perfect cocktail of conflict for both parties.
Malick's longtime editor Billy Weber said of the film during our chat in May, “It's all planned, it's got a release, it has a distributor,” but the sad truth is likely that more claims and counter-claims will delay the picture for the near future. Luckily we still have “Knight of Cups” and Malick's Untitled Austin-Set rock film coming up, but hopefully a happy ending awaits one of the director's most prolonged passion projects"
more details to follow.
sounds like the long in-production/release of 'Samsara' - minus the lawsuits.

Re: 'Voyage of Time' (Malick)
IMAX and indie distributor Broad Green Pictures have joined Sophisticated Films and Wild Bunch to complete financing of Voyage Of Time, the Terrence Malick big scale film. Broad Green has the option to distribute the film after it makes an IMAX debut. Pic was sold at Cannes with GAGA, Lumiere Mars and Edko among those to sign on to release in their home territories. Brad Pitt and Bill Pohlad–Malick’s co-conspirators on the Oscar nominated Tree Of Life–are among a long line of producers. Per the filmmakers, the pic is a celebration of the universe, displaying the whole of time, from its start to its final collapse. This film examines all that occurred to prepare the world that stands before us now: science and spirit, birth and death, the grand cosmos and the minute life systems of our planet. Malick is working first in the IMAX format for a 40-minute version with scientific narration by Pitt, followed by a 35mm feature-length version with narration by Cate Blanchett.
Voyage Of Time becomes the first recipient of an Original Film Fund worth $50 million that IMAX announced last May to cofi 10 films. IMAX has proven to be a go-to venue for films that distribute in outside the box ways; it also pledged to show the Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon spinoff that has a Netflix deal and is generally barred by the major theater chains. IMAX senior exec veep Greg Foster said Malick has been working on this film 30 years and that “to be able to launch our Film Fund portfolio with Malick and his imaginative style of film making is capturing lightning in a bottle. We look forward to working with Terry and his producing partners on this groundbreaking film.”
Said Broad Green Pictures principals Gabriel and Daniel Hammond: “Terrence Malick is an innovator of epic scope. We have long admired his work and could not be more excited to partner with him on this project.”

I open my eyes.
I melt.
Into the eternal night.
A spark.
You got me out of the darkness.
You gathered me up from earth.
You've brought me back to life.

Re: 'Voyage of Time' (Malick)
this movie's legal problems with Sycamore Pictures got really ugly - so now there's new news that Wild Bunch films owns the worldwide rights to this and a speculation that a 'Fall 2016' release might happen ... I'll believe it when I see it
regarding the movie's music score; news from Pitchfork (Oct. 2015) that Ennio Morricone has done the honors - now, wow that's uber cool:

Re: 'Voyage of Time' (Terrence Malick doc) Oct. 2016
Terrence Malick’s latest film “Knight of Cups,” an experimental drama about a Hollywood screenwriter’s (Christian Bale) existential crisis through a world of delirious excess, had its theatrical release this past March. The film continues Malick’s recent creative resurgence; his last two features, “The Tree of Life” and “To The Wonder,” were released this decade after a pattern of long periods of silence between films. Now, his next film will hit theaters this fall, only it will be released in IMAX instead.
“Voyage of Time: The IMAX Experience” tells the grand history of the cosmos, taking the audience on a personal journey through the universe itself, from the Big Bang to the Mesozoic Era to our present and beyond. Nearly four decades in the making, “Voyage of Time” will feature a panorama of powerful images will allow viewers to bear witness to some of the most important events of all time — the birth of the stars, the initial development of human life, and much, much more. The film is Malick’s first foray into documentary filmmaking and represents a unique cosmic experience that draws from many elements of Malick’s long, celebrated career.
The film will be released in two formats. “Voyage of Time: The IMAX Experience” is a 40-minute big screen adventure narrated by Brad Pitt and will be released exclusively in IMAX theaters on October 7th. Another version of the film “Voyage of Time: Life’s Journey,” a 90-minute cut narrated by Cate Blanchett, will take audiences on a poetic journey through a world of open questions; no release date has yet been set for that film. See an exclusive poster for the film below.

That sounds damn interesting.
My first exposure to IMAX years ago was this type of documentary short film and I've never understood the appeal of "regular" movies being shown on IMAX screens.
Also: Terrence Malik and two different cuts of the film - I smell a future Criterion release.

Brad Pitt is narrating? Yikes. Good actor but he has a case of the marble mouth. Should have just gotten Cate Blanchett to narrate both versions. Now there's an actor with a tremendous voice.

30 year production yields a 40 minute movie. Thats pretty deflating. Still excited though.
