The Wolf of Wall Street (Scorsese, 2013) — The Reviews Thread

Saw this tonight. Was very very good and directed as only Scorsese can direct a movie. So many of the complicated shots you just have to wonder how he coordinates it all. It was long but not overly so. The stuff at the end seemed rushed and where I guess a lot of the additional hour if the first cut was. I would like to see an extended cut, but I don't think Marty does them. Not the best movie I have seen this year, but certainly among the top. For a non-violent film, easily the hardest R movie I have seen. Did not bother me but 8 people (mostly middled aged women and couples) left during the showing, I could see it being pretty offensive to some women it is very misogynistic.

Man, like everyone has mention on this thread already, Margot was smoking hot and I've never notice her before... ever. But I loved that Brooklyn accent and she looked amazing.

Out of a lot of his films this one stood out to me in Marty's use of popular music. Loved hearing Howlin' Wolf in there. I've been getting into Blues for the past year and he has such a distinct voice that I can never forget it. The one the weirded me out was that more modern rock one. I've heard it A LOT on the radio. The one where they're traveling on the yacht. It just boomed out and took me off guard.
In thinking about DiCaprio's acting in here. I don't see anything he couldn't do before or that he pushed himself in his craft. It was all great standard quality work from him but I don't feel he pushed himself with this role. Which doesn't say anything about his quality, the guy is solid. The script does put him in situations I've never seen him in which makes it a more unique role for him. He may get a nomination but his work here isn't as good as some of the best from the year.

I walked out with the exact opposite reaction. I never thought the guy was capable of carrying a comedy like this, and he more than held his own. One of my favorite performances of the year. The quaalude scene is one of the funniest sequences I've ever seen. I thought his acting was perfectly in sync with the gonzo style of the film. I'm not an actor or anything, but I imagine that type of performance would be incredibly tough to deliver.

the exuberance and energy he had to maintain and that exuded from his every pore was mesmerizing.

saw it yesterday, knew pretty much nothing going into it. I found it very entertaining. Didn't feel like 3 hours either.
I'll likely buy it
two older (late 50s to 60s probably) couples walked out
one during one of the orgies, one I think during a drug binge scene but it might have been a different orgy

While my showing was packed , this apparently tanked this weekend . I think they might have done better to release it limited on Christmas and taken it wide in mid-January.

Decadence is decadence, whatever the era, maybe that's his point. I've always been kind of curious about Caligula, but I don't know if I could stomach the real outré stuff in it.

Not sure if it tanked, really. $18.5m 3-day, $34.3m 5-day. How much more a 3-hour, hard R-rated flick could make?

Regardless though, someone forgot to tell the dude that he's 71 years old and shouldn't be making movies this electrifying. He made American Hustle look like amateur hour.

i wouldn't call 18 million bucks for a 3 hour movie on 2400 screens a 'tank' the 4 other wide releases (released in more theaters & more screens) did worse than Wolf

Maybe not a total tank in that case. If this were a half hour or so shorter, I could easily see this obtaining a Scarface type following amongst young men on college campuses.

Look at William Friedkin, he's 78 and he's making lurid and provocative films even now. You don't see many younger directors making films about
