Should I feel bad for a bunch of "victims" too stupid and naive to be trusted with money?

Thank you for the article, though; it and a lot of the people who invested with Bernie Madoff proves that even those who are well-off love falling for no-risk, get rich quick schemes.

Martin Scorsese knows that “The Wolf of Wall Street” is not for everyone, but he probably didn’t expect to be lambasted by an Academy member when he arrived for the official AMPAS members screening of his film on Saturday night.

But according to a Facebook post from actress Hope Holiday, that’s what happened. Referring to the graphic three-hour film about the sex-and-drug-filled lifestyle of stockbroker Jordan Belfort, and then to the arrival of Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio at the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater, she wrote:

“[L]ast night was torture at the Academy — ‘The Wolf Of Wall Street’ – three hours of torture – same disgusting crap over and over again – after the film they had a discussion which a lot of us did not stay for – the elevator doors opened and Leonardo D. Martin S. and a few others got out then a screen writer ran over to them and started screaming – shame on you – disgusting –

”

“It’s brutal,” admitted Scorsese in a conversation with TheWrap on Friday.
“I’ve seen it with audiences, and I think it plays. I don’t know if it will be to everyone’s taste – I don’t think it will. It’s not made for 14 year olds.”

I dunno. Sounds like it's simply criticizing 80's excess.

I'm more excited to see this than any movie this year.

Some of these comments are over-the-top. I need to start ignoring them before I'm disappointed when I actually see the movie. Too much hype.

So a 75 year old woman didn't appreciate the movie? I'm not entirely shocked.

My friend loved it. 4.5 stars:

"Real life can be a funny thing, mainly because it happens differently to everyone and all you can really do is react to the different stories you here. I haven’t read the memoir by Jordan Belfort, but the movie based upon it features a lot craziness that can seemingly only be matched by Roman orgies. Here is a story that is based on reality and can really only be accepted as truth, because the events that take place are just way too wild to have come from anywhere but reality. The Wolf of Wall Street is a Martin Scorsese film that is impeccably made, despite the long runtime, and features enough lunacy to fill in the requirements for another trilogy of Hangover movies. All of this and the film still features some of the finest acting work from its star Leonardo DiCaprio, who was hell-bent on getting this film made."

Joe Nocera, a business columnist at The New York Times, wrote up this film on Sunday and points out that Jordan Belfort spent hardly any time on Wall Street. The film would more accurately be called "The Wolf of Long Island." He also points out that Belfort's scams were penny-ante compared to what the Wall Street firms did.

That's scary, sad, and really disturbing if you think about it.

I just like the visual of Leonard Maltin fleeing the screening before Scorsese shows up.

hanshotfirst1138 12-23-13 02:53 PM

Where did Leonard Maltin get his start? I've seen him on TV and DVDs from time to time, what publications did he write for?

Not sure but the first time I ever saw him was entertainment tonight, way back in the day. I think he's a good critic.

Really looking forward to this.

Interesting if both this and American Hustle get Best Picture noms. An authentic Scorsese picture and one that looks like a Scorsese picture.

I dont know about that criticism of Hustle. I think it is really accurate portrayal of the 70s which heightens the similarities to a Scorsese film.

The only criticism of hustle that I could give is that while being all kinds of awesome it is kind of disposable. But goddamn does Amy Adams have some nice legs.

When he was a teenager, Maltin founded a publication called "Film Fan Monthly," which covered old movies and old actors. He wrote a number of books, including "The Great Movie Comedians" and "The Disney Films," that were quite good and remain excellent reference sources. And he's written a lot more than that. He began his annual guide to movies on TV back in the early 1970s and I've been getting every edition since. The latest one I have is "Leonard Maltin's 2013 Movie Guide," but it had a different name early in its tenure. He taught courses on film at the New School and curated film programs at different venues including an extensive comedy series at the Museum of Modern Art sometime in the '70s.

That's not a criticism, but merely an observation. I think it's pretty good movie that plays a lot like an old school Scorsese picture, it's just a little less violent. ;)

Leonard Maltin wrote what I consider to be the greatest movie review of all-time, which I'll now publish in its entirety:

Isn't It Romantic? (1948)

No.

Amazingly enough, this was the first three hour film that I didn't find myself squirming in my seat for. Chalk that up to Scorsese keeping the film's momentum going all the way through. DiCaprio and Hill completely owned the film, and it was nice to see Spike Jonze in a small role also. McConaughey's role early on in the film was great, but he exited the film too quickly. A 4 out of 5 from me.

Here's my full review.
