The problem with Crystal Skull wasn't a "bad MacGuffin". I believe Indiana Jones and aliens can work; it just didn't thanks to a weak script, horrifically/embarassingly/hilariously awful action scenes, plot contrivances, etc.

Koepp's interview didn't exactly fill me with confidence about this endeavor, but with no Lucas, I remain cautiously muted.

It has to make Lucas feel good when all of the news sites have the fact that he isn't involved in the script as the main selling point to getting you to click the article.

Well Lucas brought it on himself. I'm all for an artist being confident in their craft, but when you surround yourself with yes men and don't consider you may not have the best idea in the room, you deserve the criticism when your ideas fail.

That's why I always blamed Spielberg more than Lucas. He should have known better.

As I recall, Lucas was the hold out on scripts. We may have had Indy 4 2-3 years earlier if it wasn't for Lucas putting his foot down. I'd be shocked if the Darabont script wasn't better than what we got but Lucas rejected it. I have a feeling it ultimately came down to Spielberg and Ford acquiescing just so they could finally make the damn thing.

Yeah, but unlike Lucas and Ford Spielberg was still making good/great movies, and then he churned that out. The story isn't the only problem with KotCS. I don't even think it's the biggest problem.

I don't think it's the only problem either, but as they say, garbage-in, garbage out. You start with a bad story, the rest of the production can follow suit.

I didn't like the look of the movie either.

Go watch the Red Letter Media review of Kingdom. They do a great job of pointing out all kinds of problems in the film at every level of production, not just script. Far more is wrong than the script. The sets and the editing are really poor too.

Re: Indiana Jones 5 (7/19/19, D: Spielberg) S: Ford - News, rumors, etc.

As I've said before, KotCS could've worked if it was made in 1989 instead of the uninspired remake to Raiders of the Lost Ark we got that year instead. Everyone needed to be younger and Sean Connery could've elevated the movie to greatness. Bringing back Marion and finishing with a wedding at the end with all of the franchise's past characters in attendance would've been a nice way to end everything. Things could have ended on a high note with a fantastic trilogy made up of three vastly different films.

Except even if all that happened, someone would still need to change the title of the movie. I hated the freaking title which doesn't exactly roll off the tongue. Did anyone mention to George that "Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull" had a better ring to it? Why did "Kingdom of" need to get shoehorned into the middle?

What we got there in the core concepts of the film isn't bad... it's just a lot of other shit too.

Indy and Aliens isn't bad though. That actually makes sense.

re: Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (2023, D: Mangold) S: Ford - News, rumors, etc.

Disney is pushing back the release of the next Indiana Jones movie by a full year, from July 19, 2019 to July 10, 2020.

I'm kind of surprised they wouldn't want to get this shot as soon as possible considering what happened with Carrie... and Ford crashing planes all the time.

Yep! I subscribe to this theory, but I forget where I first heard it.

Basically, the films are homages to the era in which the movie takes place.
  • The original trilogy taking place in the 1930s/early 40s paid tribute to that time's serials, full of adventurers and treasure hunters. We know this.
  • So let's think about the 4th film. Crystal Skull took place in the 1950s. What was big then? Forbidden Planet, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, War of the Worlds, and countless other ALIEN MOVIES. The 1950s-era Indiana Jones movie was an intentional homage to 1950s movies.

So, taking in that theory, I can only presume that Indy will now be in the 1960s and play beach blanket bingo.

An Indiana Jones film with the Loch Ness monster might be kind of fun. At least seems more Indiana Jonesish than flying saucers.

I get the feeling this will eventually end up getting a reboot with Chris Pratt

It was already rumored and discussed earlier in the thread back in 2015.

Atlantis, the True Cross, Mu, lots of stuff left. Maybe Mutt dies in a tragic tree shredder accident and Indy has to pass the torch to Pratt, the meek, mild curator of a small Iowan museum.

Will Indiana Jones replace the whip with a cane?

Maybe that is what they are hoping for. I'm going to hell, aren't I?

No, his flabby wrinkly skin will replace the whip.

Jesus, Ford is going to be 76 when this starts filming and 77 going on 78 when this is released.

Do they plan to make this Indiana Jones and the last Nursing Home?

As mentioned, I think they really need to recast/reboot this if they're serious about this. I can't imagine how this is going to be with a Senior Citizen Ford.

Probably because grey aliens seem more rooted in the 1980s/1990s than they do the era that Lucas and Spielberg were trying to evoke with Indiana Jones, which was pulp adventure magazines of the 1920s and the adventure serials of the 1930s. Myth and mysticism has always been tied to ancient artifacts and legends, so that makes more sense.

I get that, but it still feels like an awkward fit for the franchise. Plus, I thought the premise itself was a homage to a specific era, not that each film was supposed be a homage to a different genre.

I thought that's what was happening.
