Re: The Hateful Eight (2015, D: Tarantino)
Jeffery Wells pours cold water on the 70MM Roadshow :
Old Way vs. New Way
The Weinstein Company announced today that Quentin Tarantino‘s The Hateful Eight will have a one-week 70mm roadshow booking in 100 theatres between 12.25 and 12.31, and after that things’ll go digital. A release stated that “starting today, moviegoers can purchase tickets for the 70mm roadshow showings at tickets.thehatefuleight.com” — cool. But let’s be upfront. The consensus among journalists who’ve seen the Tarantino film in Ultra Panavision 70 along with its digitally shot, snow-covered western competitor, Alejandro G. Inarritu‘s The Revenant, which also opens on Christmas day, is as follows: (1) Everyone loves QT’s revival of 70mm along with an overture and an intermission and the whole roadshow experience, but (2) Emmanuel Lubezski‘s Alexa 65 photography of The Revenant is more of a knockout than Robert Richardson‘s Super 70 celluloid lensing of The Hateful Eight, if for no other reason than the fact that almost three-quarters of Tarantino’s film is shot inside a large but shadowy one-room cabin (i.e., Minnie’s haberdashery) while Inarritu’s was shot almost almost entirely outdoors, and with a camera (Alexa 65) that is extremely light sensitive. The Inarritu/Lubezki drinks in a lot more snowy footage, and delivers colors and light-levels that are much more exacting and yet subtle.

The Tower Theatre in Sacramento is a tri-plexed, former single screen. I'd rather see Hateful Eight on digital in that theater's original large auditorium than in 70mm in just a portion of it. I don't patronize chopped-up theaters, period.

I got an email update from the theater saying the Weinstein Group have forced them to change their upcharge ($4 more), though all tickets purchased before the change at the Grand Lake Theatre will be honored.
They also mentioned that they will not allow the theater to have their normal Bargain Tuesday pricing for the 70mm.
Sounds like the Weinsteins are a pain in the ass to work with.

Got mine for Arclight in La Jolla.
Will you need to see a special 6K showing of the Revenant for it to be worth it? Will there be special showings?

I am going to see two movies in a week that will cost me over $40. 70mm Hateful Eight and Star Wars at Cinepolis Luxury. That is just nuts. Hope they are both worth it.

Hmmmm, looks like they're onsale at all of the Arcligh locations, so I guess that whole roadshow version point is moot? It's definitely not at the Dome.

Irvine is showing up as being 70mm, but I thought only the IMAX was capable of that projection there and SW has that screen all month. Guessing I'm wrong?

Got my Roadshow tickets today. I sort of think I need to dis-invite my wife. I can only imagine the bitching I'm going to hear about the length, intermission, and most of the movie being in a single location.

Chose a Christmas Eve showing.
Was gonna go to Arclight La Jolla as well, but I was told tonight that Grossmont Center has a true wide screen.

Stoked for Hollywood Theater in PDX. They just restored their original 50s era 70mm set-up (2001 recently was phenomenal, Vertigo was less impressive, but personally I felt the sound mix was a bit abbrasive); the theater used to do Cinerama in its heyday and I believe the screen is wide enough to maximize the Ultra Panavision presentation

Damn, not a single roadshow screening anywhere near me.
I'll be in Houston the week of the 4th, but the 70mm will be gone by then (unless they extend it a week... not likely).
Double damn.

Man, I would really like tickets to go on sale sometime this year for Vegas.
At this point, I might just end up in LA after all.

Re: The Hateful Eight (2015, D: Tarantino)
No, he's basing his statements on the fact that he likes the cinematography of the Revenant better than the cinematography of The Hateful Eight, which of course is pretty much irrelevant. The appropriate comparison in debating the merits of 70mm would be to compare the 70mm H8 to the non-existent, alternate universe version of H8 shot digitally. Otherwise all he's doing is pointing out that movies shot digitally can look good too. That said, it's Jeffrey Wells, who might actually be certifiably insane.

Our one theater has two showings, one on Christmas eve and one again on New Years eve. Not sure about the $16 tickets though, since they are double the price of regular tickets.

Looks like the AFI in Silver Spring, MD has it in 70mm. Gonna have to take a drive one day after Christmas. For anyone that has gone there - how is the theater?

It's top notch. I've seen Lawrence several times there, 2001, West Side Story. They know what they're doing, and the atmosphere is great.
