The opening weekend was great, but had a huge drop-off after that. People complained and still complain on the internet about the 2009 movie.

And still the highest grossing solo Jason movie. A huge drop-off is expected for ANY horror film. One that has legs is about as common as the Olympics. I know box office doesn't equal quality, but the studio doesn't care. I think it's funny about the criticism, considering it's actually pretty decent, and at least keeps the essence of the character the same as the early films.

This week Brad Fuller of Platinum Dunes offered the latest update on their latest reboot of Friday the 13th. Much like the last reboot (which I liked) it's gonna be an origin story. “You kind of have to understand Jason Voorhees, so we go back and we kind of started over and work our way forward," Fuller told The Reel Word. I kind of disagree - you don't have to understand Jason - but that's how Hollywood works today.
Fuller went on to say that the new movie would be sort of like an origin. “Origin-ish, but it’s an origin that no one has seen before. Obviously Pamela’s there, but it’s a little bit different from what you’ve seen before.”
I can tell you what's different: sources close to the production have told me that Aaron Guzikowski's script for the reboot includes Jason's dad, Elias.
This isn't as out of left field as you might think. Elias Voorhees has almost been in Friday the 13th movies before. The original ending of Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives had Elias visiting Jason's (empty) grave. He's obliquely referenced in Jason Goes To Hell, which introduces Jason's half-sister (she has to be Elias' daughter because Pamela called Jason her only child. Not that continuity means that much in these films...). And he was depicted in a comic book called Friday the 13th: Pamela's Tale, which was sort of an origin story for Pamela Voorhees in which she chopped him to pieces because he was abusive.
Of course there's no reason the new script will follow that comic book story. Whatever direction it goes, I'm intrigued. As a longtime fan of the series the unseen Elias Voorhees has always captured my imagination, and after so many decades of killers with mommy issues I'll be glad to see Jason reimagined as having some beef with his dad, perhaps.

I liked the 2009 version too. Seeing Jason running was kind of weird, but I guess it's an update that needed to happen. The only installment I just completely loathe is Jason Goes To Hell. I understand that they were trying something different (at the insistence of Sean Cunningham apparently), but you go into a Friday The 13th movie with certain expectations...and seeing Jason kill people is pretty high on that list. Watching possessed people kill, and then spit out mouth turds, is not what I was hoping for.

No. Not really. He's a zombie that wears a mask and kills kids. Don't act like you guys have some hot shit idea just because Jason's origins have never been exposed like an in-depth Dateline piece. This could be Rob Zombie's "Halloween" all over again.

^ Exactly. Apparently no one learned their lesson from Zombie's Halloween.

I liked the remake, too. Jason was never a character where I cared how he got his immortality. His motivation is more or less there, that's enough. He kills, he can't be killed, he just is.

Also, for any major F13 fans in here, the Crystal Lake Memories Blu-Ray documentary is sensational: http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/61673...iday-the-13th/
Seven hours, covers every film in the franchise. Really well done.

Previously slated for January 13, the next chapter in the Jason Voorhees saga will now debut October 13, 2017, according to Variety. This marks the fourth time the film's release has been postponed.

In the timeframe they've taken to get this off the ground, 1980s Paramount would have cranked out 3 Friday the 13th films already.

Less talk, more movies. It's part of the series tradition.

It's sad because it's true. Honestly while most of the films aren't masterpieces most of them were pretty entertaining to some degree too. I get the feeling when and if this finally happens it'll be a let down like the 2009 remake and most modern horror.
