re: Untitled Friday the 13th film

This franchise is such a go to staple. The movies are simple and some decent kills. I love X, but only one I can’t stand is what 5, the one where Jason isn’t Jason? That’s just abysmal...

A really good video from Midnight's Edge about the History of Friday the 13th, and the holdup in terms of the wrangling of rights in bringing back Friday the 13th to the big screen.

Re: Untitled Friday the 13th film

Screenwriter Victor Miller has won a summary judgement in the U.S. District Court against the producers of the film, including Sean Cunningham. The producers filed a lawsuit against Miller well over a year ago after Miller attempted to reclaim ownership of the property. There is a provision in copyright law that would allow an author to end a current agreement of rights and reclaim ownership after 35 years have passed form the publishing date. Cunningham and others have tried to say that Friday was written as “work-made-for-hire” and that would mean that they keep the rights and Miller wouldn’t be able to terminate the agreement they had made because he had no ownership. Miller argues that it was not work-made-for-hire, and there was never anything put in place that said it was. Cunningham argues that he came up with the idea, hired the creative team, raised the funds for the film, and controlled all creative decisions on Friday The 13th. He also says that since Miller is a member of the Writer’s Guild, they used a standard form that made it very clear Miller was an employee.

Now, this doesn’t mean its over. The courts decision only cover the US, so the producers could still retain overseas rights. Also, another battle could loom of trademarks like “Jason Voorhees” and such, as this only covers the first film. As everyone knows, Jason is not the maniac we all know and love until the sequel. That also complicates things. This judgement has already taken a year, and the full opinion is still to be revealed.

Until it is, Jason waits, lurking in the shadows. This case has prevented more films and such from coming out, even when they were on the brink of going in front of cameras. It also made life a living hell for the producers of last year video game. Hopefully this all finally untangles itself soon so Friday The 13th fans can see their favorite hockey-wearing maniac on the big screen again soon.

I expect to see a film featuring Mason Hoorvees as a mass murderer at Camp Golden Lake.

Re: Untitled Friday the 13th film

It seems like a lot of the things that are associated with the franchise (Jason as the killer, hockey mask, etc) were introduced AFTER the first movie. So it would be possible to do a "sequel" that skirted around the elements introduced by Miller. Similar to "Blofeld" appearing in For Your Eyes Only.

Cool.

Anything is better than another haunted house or zombie or slow moving teenagers lost in the woods9(non-Jason) movie.

It can't possibly be worse than the previous remake. It just can't.....

The remake wasn't good, but I didn't think it was awful. It is better than both the NoES and Halloween remakes.

I agree with that part, but also think it’s like saying, “don’t worry, we’ve replaced the monster under your bed with one that’s slightly less poisonous.”

I didn't mind the remake with Jared Padelecki, but it didn't have the same feel to it when it came to Jason.

I thought that the first 20-25 minutes of the remake were awesome, but it got progressively worse after that. The acting in that movie was atrocious. I hated every single character in that movie (which I know, is somewhat typical for a Friday movie, but not to such a great extent). Hoping that when they relaunch it it's a lot better than that. I still remember that one character saying something like, "You've got great nipple placement, baby." That character made me want to throw something at the TV.

Too bad they aren't continuing the latest continuity. I think reimagining Jason Voorhees as an angry weed dealer was a great addition to the series.

Agreed, but it’s still not that great.

I had no clue LeBron James even had a production company. Kinda curious what he could bring to the table, but at the same time I get hesitant whenever I hear someone like that trying to step into something that they aren’t really known for at all.

Re: Untitled Friday the 13th film

As far as the big four "slasher" remakes, I'd rank 'em:
1. TCM
2. Halloween
3. Friday
4. Nightmare

And I really hated 2-4. Friday started out ok, but it just went off the rails. I've gotten into so many arguments about his stupid tunnel setup. He's like the mongoloid Bob Vila.

He produced a scripted show for Starz called "Survivor's Remorse"

But this would be his 1st feature. I'm sure if he gets the rights, he will hire the right people to oversee the day to day production of F13. He's the name and money guy.

Re: Untitled Friday the 13th film

At first I was laughing and rolling my eyes. But upon further investigation, Lebron is a HUGE horror fan but more importantly, a HUGE Voorhees fan.
This doesn't give him a pass but Look what happened when Kenny Powers wrote the latest Halloween.
Maybe 'fans' can actually make a good movie before these Hollywood freaks think they can.
The last F13 was junk. Take away the hockey mask and it wasn't even close to an F13 film.

IMO, I'd love for them to ditch the reboot and continue on from Jason X on Earth 2

LeBron never missed a layup, he can handle a Friday the 13th film.

Re: Untitled Friday the 13th film

It’s really unfortunate that they missed the opportunity to release the thirteenth film on a Friday the 13th in October last year. Should have been perfect timing to market it.
