This has an all-star cast, including Meryl Streep. I enjoyed John Wells' first film "The Company Men"
Anyone think this will be good? Comes out on Christmas Day.

I liked it.
aside from nearly jettisoning around forty minutes of dialogue/content from the original 'play' version - the streamlined story is quite good.
Streep and Roberts dominate the story and the movie - they are both remarkable and fascinating to watch. My Oklahoma friend really liked this movie, my other friend - who doesn't like 'shouty' movies thought it was okay.

Good to hear. Yeah, I knew they'd have to scrap some of the stuff from the play. I'm looking forward to seeing this.

I'm really looking forward to the film. I read the play and enjoyed it. As an Oklahoman, I get excited when a film takes place in my state. It doesn't happen very often, and usually it's not good unless people are singing or Edward Norton is growing pot.

Or nuclear fuel rod plant employees turned union activists who are (probably) murdered.

even with two intermissions - the play's running time is 3 hours and 20 minutes. it's quite a staggering play to do both physically and emotionally.

It's a shame William Friedkin didn't get his hands on this film. He knocked Tracy Lett's other 2 plays out of the park.

Saw this today. A great black comedy. Dysfunctional families at their finest.
Meryl is fucking amazing as always. You know... you look at a career like hers. I think we can agree she would be the female version of a Pacino or DeNiro... but she never really went down that path of shit they did. Even her fluff movies aren't awful.
The whole cast was really exceptional in this. This is the best Roberts has been and Chris Cooper was fantastic.

From A.O. Scott's review in the NYT...in regards to the acting and Streep:
"Another way to think of 'August: Osage County,' which was directed by John Wells and adapted by Tracy Letts from his own play, is as a thespian cage match. Within a circumscribed space, a bunch of unquestionably talented performers is assembled with no instructions other than to top one another. One twitchy confession must be excelled by another. The same with smoldering, sarcastic speeches, explosions of tears, wistful jags of nostalgia and imperious gazes of disgust.
It goes without saying that nobody can beat Ms. Streep at this game ... [who] smokes, rants, bites her fingers, slurs her speech and spews obscenities with the gusto of a tornado laying waste to a small town."

Really liked this. I've always like Julia Roberts so I knew she'd pull off this type of role with ease and Meryl is amazing as always. I really enjoyed Julianne Nicholson and Juliette Lewis here too. Also forgot that Sherlock was in this so was surprised that he popped up.
The two hours flew by so fast that I was upset that I didn't get to spend more time with this f'ed up family.
That catfish scene and its dialogue was so bizarre, but i loved it so. I glad I didn't read the play beforehand to save on being spoiled on things, but I am going to read it soon.

Finally saw this. I thought it had some good funny scenes, and the cast did a great job overall.
It's ridiculous how good Streep always is. She is leagues apart from almost every actress.

Really enjoyed this. Stellar acting across the board. Tracy Letts is 3 for 3 in great screenplays. Would really like to see him get more recognition that he does.
