Movies "Taken Away" from the Director
I think we all know what this means. The director wants to make a movie a certain way. A studio or actor disagrees, and they wind up having little to no input as far as the final product is concerned. "Brazil" was an interesting case in that it was taken away at one point, and then Gilliam staged enough of a battle to maintain control.
Others off the top off my head:
-American History X
-Blade Runner- don't know if what played in theaters was with Ridley Scott's approval or not, but given his love for his DC, I am guessing not.
-Thor: The Dark World-changes might be for the better
Apparently X-Men origins was taken away from Gavin Hood in some regard as well, though I never read anything about tit.

It wasn't "taken away" from him, but the studios forced down his throat the Deckard voiceover, which even Harrison Ford mocked when he was recording it. To this day, that's what fans have hated the most. The great documentary Dangerous Days goes into detail about it. If you enjoy the movie, the documentary is well worth a watch.

Game of Death
Bruce Lee would have been the director had he not passed away. Unfortunately, it was taken away from him because of death. I think if Lee would have made the movie he envisioned, it would have been a huge international and critical hit. Robert Clouse was basically hired to make a movie out of a bunch of fight scenes and of course you all know the end result....shit

Not sure why that footage was left out, but it can all be seen in the documentary Bruce Lee - A Warrior's Journey.( see that section here:

Re: Movies "Taken Away" from the Director
Paul Schrader's Exorcist prequel is a very unique situation finally ending up with Morgan Creek reshooting the entire film with Renny Harlin at the Helm...and legendary cinematographer Vittorio Storraro shooting both versions and featuring Stellan Skarsgard playing Merrin in both films.
This was insanity...

P.S The Schrader version ending up being much better BTW.

Some other Pixar/Disney films:
- Bolt - Chris Sanders was removed after resisting changes to the story.
- Ratatouille - Brad Bird took over from Jan Pinkava.
- The Thief and the Cobbler - After working on the film, on and off, for 28 years, Richard Williams was removed and Fred Calvert was assigned by the Completion Bond Company to finish the film as cheaply and quickly as possible. Miramax bought the US distribution rights and edited it down even further.
