This October's Horror Films are practically non-existent. What happened?
 

Alright - so we have the new Carrie in the theater, the next Paranormal Activity movie doesn't come out til January (?!) ... um.... this year's October is really dry in not releasing any new horror movies - glad a number of the chains are doing one of showing of classic horror films and some local arthouse theaters are doing the same as well.. .but sheesh... what's the deal... ?? what happened?

I think they ran out of horror movies to remake not counting Carrie. Plus have you seen the horror movie selection currently on Netflix?

actually I think it's pretty good.

and given the positive reviews for the new Chucky movie, Universal NOT releasing this theatrically is a head scratcher.

Didn't a bunch of horror films get released earlier in the year with words like "Purge," "Conjuring" and "Insidious" in the titles? Maybe everyone's just "horror'd out." :shrug:

I actually mentioned that somewhere along the way in one of the horror challenge threads. October just doesn't feel complete for me without catching at least a couple of horror flicks at the theater.

Studios are too busy blowing their money on the next superhero franchise, I've been hearing nothing accept stuff about Captain America, Thor, Superman and Batman, and Ant-Man for the past two weeks.

Yeah there's been some decent horror films this year such as: The Conjuring, Evil Dead, The Purge, and You're Next, but they all came out earlier for some reason. I agree that it does seem odd that Universal went the direct to DVD/Blu-ray route with Curse of Chucky. It probably would have done decently as a theatrical release especially with this October not having much in the way of theatrical horror titles. Also Insidious Chapter Two came out in September, I don't get why they didn't push it back a few weeks and put it into October. I think this is the first year in a long time that we haven't gotten a yearly sequel to one of the big franchises. For a while we got a Saw film every year if I remember correctly and then Paranormal Activity got three films in a row (I actually didn't realize until now that there was a three year gap between the original Paranormal Activity and Paranormal Activity 2).

The studios have grown more cautious with big-budget horror productions. Horror makes them money as long as they don't spend a lot of money to make them. The safest movies for them are the endless remakes and sequels in the genre.

It's not like horror films are all that expensive to begin with. Compared to most other films that studios throw a lot of money at horror films are generally pretty cheap as they can basically get a bunch of no names to play the victims and use whatever plot device as the person/thing that kills or causes the scares. The most expensive part is probably the gore and effects stuff.

I also read horror movies don't do well during bad economic times instead people want to see comedies I guess that explains the successes of Identity Thief, The Heat, We're The Millers, This Is The End, and Bad Grandpa.

PA1 sat on the shelf for a couple years while the studio tried to remake it. It was released in the fall of 2009.

Did you type that to yourself and then read it? The times have been bad for a long, long time. Lower budget horror movies have been making a mint recently.

Have any of you actually seen the new Chucky movie? It's just awful. Fun, but awful.

I don't blame Universal for not releasing it theatrically. It would've been a disaster.

But I still love the Chuck-ster. He "slays" me.
