Tusk (2014, D: Kevin Smith) S: Parks, Long, Osment, Rodriguez

from Variety
Genesis Rodriguez is in final negotiations for the female lead in Kevin Smith’s horror pic “Tusk.”

Smith will write and direct which evolved from Episode 259 of his Smodcast podcast with Scott Mosier. Justin Long and Michael Park also star.

Story follows a podcaster who sets out to interview an eccentric, reclusive old seafarer, only to find himself a plaything in the gruesome plot of a deranged killer.

Shooting starts next month, i assume this will come out sometime in 2014. Curious if he'll try for a traditional theatrical release or if this will be like Red State

I wonder what the status is of Hit Somebody and Clerks III.

Kevin Smith's never-ending slump continues.

Yeah this is a little weird - he was so committed when saying Red State would be the last film he would ever make and he now has what's to be expected, 3 films in the works.

When you list out all of Kevin Smiths movies from best to worst, Red State is the last film.

I was pumped up when I first heard about it. Then severely disappointed when I saw the final product.

Red State had its flaws but I enjoyed it and appreciated Smith trying to branch out a bit.

Never heard of Genesis Rodriguez until I looked her up on google, :hump:

Kevin Smith was cool, then the 90s ended. If Allison Anders (a much superior director imho) was a man she would have his career longevity.

Overall I enjoyed Red State, will be interested in seeing this.

I always take it with a grain of salt when someone announces "I'm only doing one more movie/book/record..."

She's also in those ads with Kate Upton and Hannah from New Girl.

Got to get paid. Don't want to ruin your name. Smith doesn't come across as a guy who can retire right now. Overhead is a bitch.

Red State was a very uncomfortable little movie. Dogma and Clerks II are prime Kevin Smith movies. I'm not always on board. But I generally like them.

I think he ranks in the $$ from all of the podcasts and the speaking tours he does.

Granted he's never willing to fork over his own money if something needed to be done. (there was an alternate ending for Red State that he said was too expensive to do for the budget they were working on)

Everyone says that putting up your own money for your movie is a big no-no. I'd imagine that it results in a lot of self-indulgence (I just realized how silly that sounds in a Kevin Smith thread). It can also cause financial ruin (where-as most movies are financed "from a pot" or with "vanity money" ... nobody invests their life savings in the movie business).

Would have loved to see the Rapture ending, though. I think I could have done it without too many effects. But I didn't produce/direct the thing.

Here's hoping this one gets a proper release, but seeing how many people Smith pissed off with his Red State stunt, its probably not likely.

I don't think he wants to release anything properly anymore. At a recent Q&A, when talking about Clerks III, he said he'd like to take it on tour, but the Weinsteins have the right of first refusal, so if they want it, it will get a regular release.

Smith can fuck off then.

Why can't he do both? Take it on tour for a couple months then give it/them a wide release? Seems pretty myopic to think everyone wants to pay $50 to see his movie.

Yeah, the problem with Smith isn't that he's trying to be dishonest, but he needs to be more careful about what he's saying he will be and won't be doing - since projects get cancelled all the time and/or changed in Hollywood. Just because you're writing a script doesn't mean you're making a movie.

So we've gotten:

"Hit Somebody will be my last movie."
"Hit Somebody will be a TV miniseries."
"Clerks III will be my last movie."
"I'm going to be making a movie called Tusk."

And, of course, every new project is "the best thing I've ever written/filmed." It DOES get tiresome after a while, although I do like his passion.

Kevin Smith's work might be easier to tolerate if he wasn't his own biggest fan.

Have you ever listened to him? He admits all the time that he's a mediocre filmmaker.

I did thinks his idea for The Green Hornet wasn't bad, much better than what Rogen did.

Intentional self-deprecation doesn't mean he's not completely full of himself. I've not seen many more people in his line of work, if any at all, who were more intent on promoting themselves at every possible turn. If he put just half the effort into writing a movie than he does making sure he's on the lips and minds of everyone in the world, he might actually release something a little better than mediocre.

Exactly, he gives himself way too much credit.
