DePalma created an unforgettable, breathtaking sequence of love and loss. His great tragic humanism was more powerful than Cuaron’s tepid “hope.”"

Can we say "troll"?

Oh, c'mon, that was a great sequence. The rest of MISSION TO MARS may not have lived up to it, but you've gotta acknowledge that scene.

Sorry, I really don't remember much of "Mission to Mars." I remember thinking it sucked big fat donkey dick.

The fact that he uses the word "opalescent" in the first sentence tips off that he's a pretentious jagoff.

Armond White is a contrarian. I think he has a purpose. Criticism is about making you think more about the subject.

Ha. I wrote that message, and then Google'd Armond and it came up with this: http://entertainment.time.com/2013/1...-armond-white/

Re: Gravity (Cuarón, 2013) — The Reviews Thread

My problem with Armond White isn't that he dislikes popular films (I often agree with his "contrarian" opinion) - it's that he's a terrible writer and he tends to spend more time condemning people who disagree with him than he does actually talking about movies.

There is a place for contrarianism - but Armond White, in my opinion, just isn't very good at it. He's not thought provoking, he's just condescending.

Fortunately, it's also very easy to tune him out.

Some more thoughts on the science of it from AICN's astrophysicist:

Re: Gravity (Cuarón, 2013) — The Reviews Thread

^ Good article. I'm able to look past a lot of the mistakes in the movie due to artistic license and I'm glad to read that an astrophysicist can as well. Though I gotta say, if you need to pull out complicated mathematical equations to prove the mistake, you're probably looking deeper than anyone else.

However, the most amazing thing I took away from that article is that somehow AICN has a fucking astrophysicist working for them when they can't even update their website from the late 90s design!

If I want that, I'll read Rex Reed. At least Rex can write.

Astrophysicists are a dime a dozen. Now web designers, good luck finding one of those.

This is a pretty hilarious negative review. It reads like satire.

It's funny, he did an interview with James Cameron when Avatar came out, Cameron ended up kind of conducting the interview asking him questions about his research.

Enjoyed the heck out of it when I saw it last week. I think the film works best for me if

Spoiler:
she died outside of the ISS just prior to entering it The rest is her soul coming to terms with her death and letting go, etc. Works the other way too.

Just saw it last night. Was really, really impressed with it. On a technical level, it's just amazing. Really felt authentic in the moment. Wonderful performance by Bullock -- by far her best work and miles better than The Blind Side. Clooney was Clooney and that's just fine by me. I have no idea how they made things look that authentic but it was quite an achievement. Last two films I've seen (Rush and Gravity) have been my two favorites this year.

Interesting piece over at Cartoonbrew. Damn, that third astronaut at the beginning was entirely computer animated.

Is Gravity an animated film?

I guess someone will have to determine how much live-action is needed for a film to be called "live" instead of animated. Sin City, as an example, was mostly greeen-screened so maybe that movie is actually animated.

And any major effects-ridden movie is pretty much entirely pre-vised. It's not that unusual these days. The only major difference would be the amount of detail of the pre-vis.

Gravity destroys all others at the box office for the third straight week. Great news!

Would have been better if Bullock's character came across a particular James Brown song as she was scanning frequencies.

According to that Variety? article posted in the old thread, it sounded like, the only things that aren't CG are Bullock's and Clooney's heads.

Cuaron mentioned a couple years ago that the movie would basically be animated.
