Re: Gravity (Cuarón, 2013) — The Reviews Thread

I called it the Film Experience of 2013. To paraphrase Ferris Bueller, "Gravity in IMAX 3D is so choice. If you have the means I suggest seeing it this way."

And I can't wait to see this either midnight tomorrow or Friday morning in IMAX 3D.

For those that have seen it, is the camera work in this dizzying? My wife has acute vertigo and gets easily nauseated by shaky cam footage and I really want to see this in IMAX 3D with her.

There's very little in terms of "shaky cam" (like the Paul Greengrass variety), but in the early goings when Bullock's character is rotating 360 degrees at an excessive speed, hyperventilating in the process, it may be a little disorienting.

Is this already out overseas? This one I actually am tempted to see in 3-D.

Arpeggi might be the most ignorant person I've ever encountered on the internet. And yes, I realize what I'm saying!

Does this use the IMAX format? Or does it just sound better and etc in IMAX?

It was shot digitally, not on IMAX, but it was shot in 2.8K, I don't know what the AR on that is. The film in regular theaters is shown at 2.35:1.

Re: Gravity (Cuarón, 2013) — The Reviews Thread

My 80-year-old co-worker saw it and she said, "Technically, I'm sure it was quite remarkable, but there wasn't much plot, just a lot of flying around in space." She saw it in 3-D and "that was the best part of it, but a half-hour would have been just fine."

On Sandra Bullock's character: "It's really all about her. She's more of a scientist and I supposed she's had some training [as an astronaut], but then she does all of this...stuff. Give me a break!"

Maybe not the demographic of this board, but a minority opinion nonetheless.

Re: Gravity (Cuarón, 2013) — The Reviews Thread

I imagine most people going in know there won't be a whole lot of plot, more of an "experience" movie like Open Water but, you know, in space, with debris. And hopefully not nearly as dull.

I don't think 80 year-olds are the demographic of any board.

And I'm just kidding.... I hope to make it to 80 and still enjoying movies

B+ from AVClub.com

Put more simply: To see the movie on anything smaller than an IMAX screen is to not see it at all. Pony up to the extra cost and prepare to be wowed. Pure wonder is worth splurging on.

Video review from The Onion.

Gravity is a cinematic experience so grand and awe-inspiring that by the time the film's breathtaking fifteen minute opening sequence had ended, I had already become dellusional.

Saw it last night. Sound and fury, signifying nothing. Too bad. Nice as a tense theme park ride throughout, but character and story are way underdone.

So it was basically a Transformers movie?
