Estimated $43m for the weekend, if this holds true it will be the highest grossing opening for the month of September. The production company (Blumhouse) has opened two micro-budget (< $5m) horror movies at over $30m this Summer (this and The Purge). Getting Fast and Furious 7 went to his head, he'll be back to horror within 2 years.

Friday Grosses:
1. Insidious: Chapter 2 (Blumhouse/FilmDistrict) NEW (Runs 3,049] PG13
Friday $20.1M, Weekend Estimate $43.0M, Cinemascore: B+

2. The Family (Europecorp/Relativity) NEW [Runs 3,091] R
Friday $5.3M, Weekend Estimate $15.5M, Cinemascore: C

3. Riddick $2,200,000 (Friday, $26.5m total gross)
4. We're The Millers $1,735,000 (Friday, $127.9m total gross)
5. The Butler $1,664,000 ($96m total gross)
6. Instructions Not Included $1,390,000 ($23.7m)
7. One Direction: This Is Us $830,000 ($25m)
8. Planes $707,000 ($80.6m)
9. Elysium $635,000 ($86.9m)

I wonder if they're now thinking of "We're Still The Millers."

I was thinking "At Home with the Millers", there's no way a movie with a $37m budget grosses over $100m domestic and nearly $200m worldwide doesn't get considered for a sequel. Though the director's last movie had similar luck and still hasn't yielded one (Dodgeball, which pulled about $167m worldwide on a $20m budget)

I'm sure he's already getting burnt out on the genre, but I'd actually like to see Patrick Wilson make that next step to horror-icon status. He's already close enough with Conjuring,Insidious 1 & 2, (And to some extent), Phantom of the Opera and Hard Candy.

Conjuring 2 might already be greenlit, correct?

Where did you get that notion?

whats amusing about this is that they released a 20 minute longer cut for this weekend hoping the tweens decide to see it again, guess it didn't work

I don't follow One Direction so I know crap about the movie but was there a big marketing push for the longer version? Maybe tweens just didn't know it was out. They saw it once so didn't think there would be a different version released later.

Maybe if they'd announced a shorter version, the tweens would've come out.

Man, Wan must be riding quite the high right now. Funny to think his career was in jeopardy not too long ago, and now look where he is. I hope he gets back to horror after FF7.

Disney was smart to release Planes so late in the summer season.

This is the End finally cracked $100mm. Good, deserved it.

I do hope that Wan kind of takes away the massive cgi bits for more real crash and burn type of stuff. I love F5 and F6 but for all the enjoyment that that ridiculousness had...nothing beats real shit going crazy on the screen.

Saw was on TV this week and I rewatched it, I forgot how horrible the acting was but the plot still kind of holds up.

The acting was bad, but eh the director was new. Kind of surprised at all the talent that is in the movie, especially considering the budget ($1.2m).

You sure that was the budget? I'd always read it was 700k.

That was the Wikipedia cited budget. I thought it was closer to $750,000 as well.

i read there was so little time to film that they just used the first or 2nd takes, so maybe thats why the acting isn't that great

That sounds right, I never paid much attention to it but that was pretty fast:

Pre-production Sept 15th - Sept 21st, 2003
Filming Sept 22nd - October 11th, 2003

Yeah, Wan and Whannell pretty much "El Mariachi'd" the whole thing but that ending still holds up.

I was also semi surprised that The Family did somewhat well. Deniro hasn't had a lead hit in a while, & while 15 mil isn't amazing, i did see EW predict it would only do about 9 mil.

I wonder if it would be better acted if it was done today, I mean an hour long episode of Dexter is better acted than that movie was and I'm sure they shoot those things in like a week or two.

per imdb, they didn't even have time to do full rehearsals so a lot of it was essentially first go throughs

And I'm sure a full episode of Dexter costs way more than Saw did.

Re: Box Office Thread 9/13 - 9/15/2013 - Wan leaves the horror genre on top.

FF7 is going to be a huge hit, but just wish they did it on the Rock's schedule and now he MAY have a cameo if they are lucky. At least Jason S is going to be in it. End of the day, Rock helped bring that franchise back.

As for Wan leaving horror, it is a good decision. I love horror, but you don't get the fame and the prizes in the genre. Kind of shocked that Insidious broke those records as the reviews weren't too nice. Then again, You're Next got amazing ratings and that POS put me to sleep and had horrible acting.
