Wow, I thought the first 12 minutes were great.

Best film I've seen this year. Provocative, thoughtful, beautiful, shocking. And brilliant.

I don't get why someone would give up after 12 minutes. That really isn't much time. I wasn't bowled over as others on here but it was worth watching the whole movie.

Exactly. The intro is like six minutes long to begin with!

Re: UNDER THE SKIN (2013) (dir. Jonathan Glazer) (Scarlett Johansson, Paul Brannigan)

Rented this the other night. It took me a minute, or twelve.... to convince myself to stay with it. I ended up grabbing my phone and looking up this thread to see if it was going to be worth it. I know many here were majorly blowing their loads over this film, but I wasn't convinced.

I do think the music and the visuals were great. The story, what little there was, was ok. ScarJo was alright. I did enjoy the lack of dialogue. I think that and the music added so much to the creepy atmosphere. I will also agree with someone who said the heavy Scottish accents added to the "alien" vibe of the film.

Bottom line it was a good Arthouse horror/sci-fi film. Kinda different...but not really. Since it has "arthouse" status it allows the lack of original story to seem like it's better than it really is. I mean come on, it's about an alien who seduces men and "processes" them. Nothing original there.

One of my favorite movies of the year so far. Can't seem to get it out of my head. This movie has some of the most striking images I've ever seen. I loved Mica Levi's haunting and disturbing score.

A case where the minimalist style of the film got in the way of itself imo. I felt like it was an accomplishment just to finish the film. Had the remote ready to FF multiple times throughout, thankfully it got more interesting towards the end. An interesting film for sure, but a good thing I redboxed it vs a blind buy.

Saw it broken into two sittings. Everyone raved about it here and at the Blu-ray.com forums. Hated it. 1:50 movie and it only got interesting the last 8 minutes.

Has anyone here read the book? I'm curious, how much does it relate to the film?

I have the book and it's less abstract than the film by far.

Brilliant movie. Absolutely loved it. There hasn't been sci-fi film like this in a long time. It was so haunting and hypnotic. I know it's not for everyone. But it gets my highest rating and hands down one of the year's best.

Only the main concept of picking up men is the same. The book is extremely different otherwise.

Both the novel and the film are excellent, IMO.

Re: UNDER THE SKIN (2013) (dir. Jonathan Glazer) (Scarlett Johansson, Paul Brannigan)

Redboxed this last night. Liked it overall, but that's upon reflection. This is definitely not a movie for everyone, and I think a majority of people who blind bought might be men who will only watch the nudie scenes from this point forward. In all honesty, I kind of wish I had blind bought, as it is an intriguing movie. I think I might try to read the book and then give it another try. The style was very odd, kind of a David Lynch meets Lars von Trier.

Re: UNDER THE SKIN (2013) (dir. Jonathan Glazer) (Scarlett Johansson, Paul Brannigan)

I liked this movie for the most part. It wasn't the best I've seen this year but in my top 10 that I've seen so far this year but probably won't end up there at the end of the year. I agree with some others about the score. That shit stays with you after watching the movie.

I'm surprised i haven't seen more discussion on the beach scene in here. What are people's thoughts on it?

I watched it for the naked Scarlett... though I did play it on x2 speed and only slowed it down on the naked Scarlett parts. /drool

It was ok, nothing special... the movie was. Scarlett is so fucking hot. lol

Yeah, the beach scene was messed up... poor baby. Dumbass father... lol

In the theater, there was a 20' naked Scarlett. Now if we couldn't only get the projectionist (if they are called that anymore) to freeze-frame for us....

Re: UNDER THE SKIN (2013) (dir. Jonathan Glazer) (Scarlett Johansson, Paul Brannigan)

Saw this at our local film festival on the weekend - quite liked it but at the same time not sure I'll ever watch it again, disturbing and eerie and beautiful all at once. The guy behind me actually has the best succinct review of it I've heard: "Now they've made a sequel to The Man Who Fell To Earth."

I really didn't understand the beach scene, but the same could be said about the rest of the movie.

The scene is there to show that her kind are supposed to be programmed to have no sympathy for anything other than getting the job done.

It's a key scene in the film that is a good juxtaposition to her state in the second half.

Question: what were your expectations for this film exactly?

I haven't seen it yet, but I expect the Blu in the mail sometime this week. Everyone I know that has seen it, hated it. They were expecting some kind of sci-fi action with SJ shooting weapons and kicking ass. They'll probably love Lucy.
