Palo Alto (2014) W & D by: Gia Coppola (Francis granddaughter) S: James Franco

Another Coppola becomes a filmmaker. Daughter of the deceased Gian Carlo Coppola, granddaughter of Francis Coppola.

Rarely does a Coppola let me down. Francis, Eleanor, Roman, Sofia, now Gia. So I'm game to see this.

We have to admit that we sort of forgot "Palo Alto" was even happening, but it is notable for a few things. Firstly, it's the feature debut of Gia Coppola, yet another family member getting into the filmmaking business. She's mostly done music videos and commercial work for now, and this marks her first time not only directing, from a screenplay she penned herself. Secondly, the film has a pretty interesting cast including Emma Roberts, Nat Wolff, Val Kilmer and....Franco, playing a football coach? Okay, we're intrigued. Here's the official synopsis:

An unflinching take on teen angst and adult ineptitude, PALO ALTO is from first-time helmer Gia Coppola. Teddy, April, Fred and Emily use booze, marijuana and sex to get through the turmoil of adolescence.

Damn... she looks so much like Sophia.

I'm curious as what the difference is between this Palo Alto... and the 3 films that were funded through Indiegogo based on the same book.

Holy shit. She does look like Sophia.

It said football coach but those kids look like they're wearing soccer shirts. I'm assuming they're talking about the international football type of football?

Oh look, she was in the Godfather Part 3 too. I have nothing to add.

Nevermind the zombies, I think we need to start worrying about Coppola's overrunning the world!

Absolutely LOVED this. Reminded me of something between Kids, River's Edge and Sofia's Virgin Suicides. It wouldn't surprise me if one day down the road Gia becomes 4th generation Coppola to win an Oscar. Such an amazing debut. Even more surprising is that its based on a book by James Franco. I never thought I'd say this but I'm probably gonna read a novel written by James Franco.

This was ok. It definitely shows promise on Gia's directing. I thought Emma Roberts was really great. I liked how they all felt like real teenagers (IMO). Some really nice cinematography. But overall, the film just kind of meanders, which essentially was the point I suppose.

Checked this out for free on Tubi TV.

It was pretty good and would like to see more of Franco's short stories adapted to the big screen and Gia do more movies.
