DIVERGENT is a thrilling action-adventure film set in a future where people are divided into distinct factions based on their personalities. Tris Prior (Woodley) is warned she is Divergent and will never fit into any one group. When she discovers a conspiracy to destroy all Divergents, she must find out what makes being Divergent so dangerous before it's too late. Based on the best-selling book series by Veronica Roth.
The full trailer will be playing during the upcoming MTV Video Music Awards.
DIVERGENT opens in theaters on March 21, 2014.

It sounds like a cross between Gattaca and The Hunger Games.
BTW, I was a little disappointed to see that this has somebody named Miles Teller, NOT the silent magician.

Yeah this last name basis thread thing isn't really working for Teller. Or the director either.

Looks pretty close to the book. Having read both this and City of Bones lately, and then watching the trailers for the adaptations, I noticed big changes in Bones just from the trailer.

Ah.
Talking about the hunger games. I recently saw it, was alright but holy shit did it have some very Battle Royale moments. Like I don't know how the author never saw that film cuz some shot was pretty close to the other.

“Divergent” director Neil Burger will not helm “Insurgent,” the second title in Lionsgate’s upcoming young-adult franchise, and the studio has set the sequel for a March 20, 2015, release.
Burger is currently in post-production for “Divergent,” starring Shailene Woodley, for a March 21, 2014, release and Lionsgate is currently seeking another director for “Insurgent.”
The March, 2015, release date requires that production start this spring. Lionsgate also announced Monday that the third film, “Allegiant,” will be released a year later on March 18, 2016.
The “Divergent” franchise — released via its Summit brand — is viewed as a key to Lionsgate’s strategy to lead in the young-adult genre. Summit’s five “Twilight” films have topped $3.3 billion in worldwide grosses and Lionsgate’s first two “Hunger Games” have pulled in over $1.4 billion.
Lionsgate also had to find a new director for “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire.” Gary Ross directed “The Hunger Games,” which opened in March, 2012, then decided against directing the second film, citing a compressed production schedule. Francis Lawrence directed “Catching Fire” and is currently on the two “Mockingjay” titles in the “Hunger Games” franchise, which are already being shot back-to-back in Atlanta and will be released in November, 2014 and November, 2015.
In February, 2011, Summit closed a deal to acquire film rights to Veronica Roth’s futuristic novel “Divergent” with Red Wagon toppers Doug Wick and Lucy Fisher attached to produce along with Pouya Shahbazian. Lionsgate then bought Summit early last year and signed “Limitless” helmer Burger to direct several months later.
“Divergent” also stars Theo James, Jai Courtney, Miles Teller and Kate Winslet. Set in a dystopian Chicago, the story centers on a society divided into five factions, each dedicated to a particular virtue — Candor, Abnegation, Dauntless, Amity and Erudite — with all 16-year-olds required on a particular day to select the faction to which they will devote the rest of their lives.
The life of the female protagonist Beatrice Prior (Woodley) changes dramatically when she switches factions.
Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer told Wall Street analysts in May that owning “The Hunger Games” and “Twilight” gives the company a catalyst in launching other properties. He noted that “Divergent” has been dated for release on the same slot used last year for the release of “The Hunger Games” and that the books have racked up strong sales.
“Divergent” was published in 2011, followed by “Insurgent” in 2012 and “Allegiant” in October.

Having seen that trailer, looks pretty close to the book... Thought the 1st 2 books were interesting with the 3rd being pretty disappointing imo. Ill be checking out the movie even if it looks fairly average.

Between this and The Fault in Our Stars, Shailene Woodley could really blow up big this year.

Does Lions Gate really expect this to do Hunger Games like numbers? well maybe not over 100 mil first week, but like 80? This seems like it will just appeal to the book readers, while everyone else stays away, unless this gets spectacular reviews

Doesn't look like early reviews are too favorable. Anybody see an early screening yet? I'd see it just for Woodley...but I don't know... 2.5 hours...yikes.

I read the books because my daughter pushed me (she was also a huge Hunger Games fan). They were OK but I have no desire to see the movie.

My wife loved the books, so I went to the movie with her (free tickets) and my daughter.
It really is a Hunger Games want-a-be, the girl even looks like Jennifer L's sister.
Had not emotional connection to the movie at all. At times I said to myself, "I wish Jennifer L was the actress in the movie".
-JL can act circles around this young lady.
***I wish I had seen the muppet movie.
I cannot believe it will do $50 million this week end.

my sister went last night at midnight. shes 23 and really likes these teen book series and their films. But she said even at 23 she felt a little too old for the film when all the teen girls would hoot and howl when the hot guys came on screen. And when one of the characters took his shirt off and a girl behind her enthusiastically said to her friend "OH MY GOD he has chest hair!"

I took my daughters to watch it tonight and I think if 10 people were in the seats, I might be a bit too generous.
My daughters read the books and loved it. I thought it was a generic movie at best... not terrible, but it wont leave you wanting more. Not having read the books myself I thought the story was ok, but again kinda like a deja vu thing feeling. I will admit though, it didnt feel like a 2.5 hour movie.

The movie wasn't really thrilling at all. There was no explanation of what the war was, if people were trying to protect themselves from each other or outside forces. The movie wanted to be more grandiose that what is really is. Besides, if I were stuck in that crusty, rundown version of Chicago then I would most likely want out rather than continue to "fight" for it.

I saw it yesterday (with teenage daughter, natch) and liked it quite a bit. Yes, it's very Hunger Games-esque, and Woodley is no Lawrence, but I found the story interesting and was rooting for the heroine. I read the first two Hunger Games books after seeing the movie and am interested in reading this book as well.
No, it didn't explain the war or any outside forces, but

Opened with 56 million this weekend. While on paper its a solid number, but it opened less than Twilight, and it opened in 3900 theaters. Has to be a mild disappointment for them
