‘The Butler’ Cleans Up With Estimated $27 Million Weekend

It's kind of crazy that Variety has the B.O. numbers already.

According to early ticket sales, “The Butler” was well on track for $9.5 million Friday, nearly doubling The Weinstein Company’s expectations for the film.

“It’s playing much better than we thought it would,” one TWC insider said.

Winfrey’s last No. 1 film was the 1986 Oscar-nominated drama “The Color Purple.”

“The Butler,” based on the true story of longtime White House butler Eugene Allen, co-stars Oscar-winner Forest Whitaker and cost nearly $28 million to produce.

Universal’s similarly low-budget “Kick-Ass 2″ saw its fanboy frenzy wane late Friday, lowering weekend estimates to $16 million, down 20% from the original film’s debut of $19.8 million.

Starring Chloe Moretz and Jim Carrey, “Kick-Ass 2″ earned $1.3 million Thursday night but the sequel is riding a not-so-super 28% fresh rating on RottenTomatoes.

Also bowing wide this weekend, Open Road’s Steve Jobs biopic “Jobs” and Relativity Media’s thriller “Paranoia.” Both films should debut to mid seven-figures.

Extremely crazy and unlikely since it's only Saturday morning.

The trailers were terrible but apparently the movie is decent so that's good.

Can we change his user title to this?

I've always wondered.

Is Arpeggi's name based off of the sound of saying the three letters...RPG? Or what?

I assume it's after the title of a Radiohead song.

Was really, really hoping someone would come up with a "Kick Ass Ass Kicked" or variation for the box office thread headline this week. :(

Kick-Ass 2 came in fourth for the weekend? Ouch. Guess that's the last we'll see of this franchise until Hollywood decides to remake the first one in ten years.

Honestly, it was a decent follow-up considering most people seemed to hate the source comic. Screw the critics -- no way it deserved a mere 27% percent on Rotten Tomatoes. The 7.5 on IMDb is a better indication of the quality of the movie.

That's very funny, but not everyone will get it. Once upon a time they would have.

I'm a little surprised the opening weekend was that poor, even with the poor critic reviews. Even though the first movie only made $48 million domestically, it seemed like there was enough people that enjoyed it for this sequel to open bigger.

Luckily the budget for the movie was only $28 million, slightly less then the first movie, so it wont exactly be a bomb.

Paranoia did $3.5 Million in 13th place. 4% on the tomatometer. Has Harrison Ford ever done anything like that before?

I really enjoyed the first one and expect to pick the sequel up on Blu-ray. It received very little advertising from what I could tell.

I saw Kick Ass 2 advertised a hell of a lot. Quite a bit more than the 1st ever got, from what I remember.

Were Maryland Theatergoers Forced To Watch ‘The Butler’ In Front Of Armed Guards?

It’s a situation that will soon inspire a million hacky late-night jokes: “I know I said Lee Daniels’ The Butler was as pleasurable as a hole in the head, but this is ridiculous.” Tiffany, who tweets as @MsFlowersTweets, went to see The Butler last night in Silver Springs, Maryland. Upon arriving at the Regal Cinemas theater, she and everyone else in the nearly all-back audience were allegedly greeted by armed guards watching them as they watched Oprah.

Oh boy. Here’s the full string of tweets.

Wonder how badly Millar will be trying to spin KA2 as a blockbuster hit.
