Re: I never saw... (Movie Edition)

the Godfather films
the LOTR films
Many classics such as Casablanca, Gone with the Wind, etc.

The good news is that I own these on DVD and will get to them eventually.

Yeah you DEFINITELY need to get to the first two Godfather films and Casablanca. The LOTR movies aint too shabby either.

Re: I never saw... (Movie Edition)

According to my icheckmovies stats (Movies that appear in the most top lists) these are the biggest ones left:
Los olvidados
Napoleon (1927)
Zemlya
Raise the Red Lantern
The World of Apu
Stachka
Aparajito
Pather Panchali
Smiles of a Summer Night
Dekalog
Shoah
Les parapluies de Cherbourg
Senso
Secrets & Lies

I'm surprised TCM still hasn't shown any of the Satyajit Ray films yet. Must be a strict distribution block on them.

And for the record, Dawn of the Dead appears in more lists than most of those wildly-acclaimed arthouse flicks I listed

Re: I never saw... (Movie Edition)

Schindler's List is probably my most high profile never seen, but there are thousands of films I haven't seen like there are for just about everyone.

I have a friend who actually has made it a point all these years to not watch E.T., ever. On what principle, I have no idea. He's just made it clear that he has absolutely no desire to see it whatsoever. Even when we're looking for a movie to watch, and when nothing else sounds good, sometimes I'll say "come on, just give it a shot, just to say you've given it a chance, then you never have to watch it again", he still refuses to see it.

Out of all those I have seen Napoleon and it is a great film from what I remember (saw it about 12 years ago on cable). I have The Apu Trilogy and The Dekalog on dvd but have not had a chance to see them. I have such a huge backlog I don't know where to begin.

From your list I've seen LOS OLVIDADOS, RAISE THE RED LANTERN and SENSO, but none of the others. I've never even heard of some of them, e.g. ZEMLYA and STACHKA.

Maybe you know them by their English titles. They are silent Soviet films Earth (Zemlya) & Strike (Stachka).

Ray is a huge blind spot in my viewing, so I haven't seen any of those.

Of that list, I have only seen Senso, Smiles of a Summer Night, and Les parapluies de Cherbourg (such a beautiful film) and recommend all three highly, but if you had to pick one, I'd go with either Cherbourg or Smiles of a Summer Night.

There you go! I've heard of them and may even have seen them back in film school. Unless I'm confusing them with other Soviet silents. Not a body of work I've ever felt like revisiting much.
