I liked STID rather well, especially in IMAX. However, I feel they jumped the gun with Khan. He's a villain they need to build towards, not just jerk out of nowhere.

I liked ST09 and STID a lot. That being said, they should go for a completely original story for the 3rd film. No tie-backs to the Prime Universe at all.

I would hope for Bryan Singer or Joss Whedon. They would've treated Trek with some respect as a franchise that has endured for near 5 decades. It will never happen EVER, but that's what I hope. So, we get more dumbed down Michael Bay-Trek.

No to Bryan Singer. Not a fan of him personally. Whedon is going to be too busy with Marvel stuff to do another big franchise.

I really liked Rise of the Planet of the Apes so I'd be down for Rupert Wyatt directing ST3. Another guy I'd like to direct it would be Duncan Jones.

"Look that's a hard one," he continued, "because J.J. has set the bar so high and he is just a unique filmmaker. There's no doubt about it. That being said, I look forward and welcome a fresh take, a new energy. If anything I think that J.J. is an inspiring individual, he's an inspiring director and he's going to push his contemporary to be better than they are. Because they're going to have to be. So whoever takes on the mantle of the next Star Trek is going to do a good job."
Though he would not speculate on who an interesting or appropriate director might be, Urban did say that he was sure that Paramount would want to have a movie out by the time of the 50th anniversary of Star Trek in 2016.
As to what he'd like to see for the third film, Urban said, "What I really believe we should do now is strive for originality. Because in Star Trek Into Darkness we took one of the most revered and loved adversaries of the Enterprise and put him in there, and did a story that had all of these wonderful nods to films from the past, and episodes from the past. I really think that what we should do from here, in my personal opinion, is strive to be original. Strive to be something different and new. You know, let's not forget that Star Trek as envisioned was about space exploration. And it would be really wonderful to harness the spirit of that and apply it to the next film, so that we do something different than a revenge-based picture."

The script for Star Trek 3 has leaked. I won't post a link but will summarize it below.
Captain Kirk get assimilated by the Borg and the rest of the crew have to travel back in time to 1986 to get a whale for some reason that isn't clear. Then when they get back there are evil alternates of themselves who all have beards. Even Uhura.

Just because he's set off for a galaxy far, far away, that doesn't mean J.J. Abrams has entirely abandoned the Star Trek franchise. As Star Trek Into Darkness is released on Blu-ray, he's started talking about what his future with Trek will look like.
The director admitted to IGN that leaving the series is "a little bittersweet," but he added, "I’m going to be producing the [next] movie. Whoever it is that directs the film will be someone we all know is going to keep the cast and crew in good hands. I feel very lucky to have been part of it. And it definitely feels like the right time to let someone come in and do their own thing. I certainly don’t want someone to come in and try to do what I would have done. We want to hire someone who’s gonna come in and bring their own sensibility. I’m very excited to see what comes next, despite feeling jealous of whoever that person is."
Part of his producing duties, it seems, is creating the story for the next movie with co-producers Bryan Burk, Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman. Talking to HitFlix, Abrams said that "it's too early to talk about details, but there have been a lot of really exciting ideas about what comes next."
We can only hope that what comes next has less to do with repeating former successes and more to do with successfully reimagining what's come before -- more Star Trek and less Into Darkness, if you will. For all those who hoped that a post-Abrams Trek would be an all-new beginning, it still may be; we're just not at the point of imagining a post-Abrams Trek just yet.

EXCLUSIVE: We know that Paramount and Skydance Productions lost JJ Abrams as the director of the third installment of Star Trek when Abrams took on Star Wars. I’m hearing the studio is sweet on Joe Cornish to direct the next film. Cornish made his feature directorial debut on Attack The Block, the saga of a group of British youths who stave off an alien invasion in their rough neighborhood.
Cornish followed by being one of the writers on The Adventures Of Tin Tin, and he and Edgar Wright wrote the script for Ant-Man, the Marvel Studios film that Wright is going to direct. Long story short, he’s gotten exposure to bigger scale project than Attack The Block, in which he admirably depicted a full scale alien invasion on a relatively small budget. Doing a movie like this would certainly put his career on a warp speed path.
It’s early days on this, but stay tuned. Paramount is readying the movie to shoot in summer, 2014. Cornish is repped by CAA.

I never saw Attack The Block (though the trailers looked funny) so I dunno if this is good news or bad. I really wish Brad Bird was directing.

Attack the Block was pretty damned good. His visual style would fit in quite well in the new Star Trek universe.
