The Kirk in the movie would simply be an older version of Pine's Kirk, who will almost certainly have a different future than "our" Kirk. How hard was that to rationalize? I'll cut Bill some slack, though - I'm guessing he hasn't even seen JJ's two films. Well, perhaps the first one, since Leonard was such a big part of it.

For a franchise that started with a reboot, they sure going back to the original franchise all too often. Really? A Kirk movie now?

again, I'm totally fine with Kirk in this. Shatner is 80 fucking years old. He looks great for 80, but he is going to be dead soon. It is now or never. Do it now, make it somewhat clever, and be done with it.

I think Orci realizes a lot of die-hards were less than happy with INTO DARKNESS. He doesn't need to win them back (Paramount is certainly happy with the box office of the last film), but I appreciate the effort to do so.

Why not do some kind of quasi-canon webisode thing. That way Shatner gets to be Kirk one last time, it will be a nice passing the torch homage, and it won't disrupt the actual movie.

Yeah I agree. If there's a good storyline to bring Shatner back as Kirk I'm all for it. He definitely still looks great for being 83 and I think it'd be cool to see him as that character one more time.

William Shatner Teases His Return in 'Star Trek 3'
7:15 PM PDT 10/6/2014 by Borys Kit
William Shatner may be returning to the Enterprise.
On Monday the iconic actor, who personified adventure handsomeness as Captain James T. Kirk for several generations of television and movie watchers, implied he was indeed returning to the storied franchise.
I'm baaaaccckk!!!
— William Shatner (@WilliamShatner) October 7, 2014
Before the tweet, Shatner admitted he was contacted by J.J. Abrams, who is producing but not directing the new movie. Badass Digest, which first broke the story of Shatner being approached for a cameo, is saying the actor would share a scene with Chris Pine, who plays the young Kirk — as well as the two Spocks, Zachary Quinto and Leonard Nimoy.

Okay, nice to see that Shatner is (possibly) confirmed. Now I eagerly await the news that Orci has been replaced as director by someone like Matt Reeves or Pete Travis.

I think he was kind of a puppet director. Seems like it was Alex Garland in control of everything cuz it was his baby. Which I'm fine with cuz it rocked but yeah. Travis seemed to just be there to do the job. Odd deal but it worked.

The Star Trek 3 news is coming thick and fast it seems. After William Shatner teased his return in the upcoming third installment of the re-boot, we have news that parts of the movie will shoot in Seoul, South Korea according to a report in the Korea Observer published Monday.
The Korea Observer cities a Facebook post from the mayor of Seoul, Park Won-soon, who may have unwittingly let the cat out of the bag regarding the shoot. "Today I met with Jeffrey Chernov, producer of Star Track 3, at the Paramount Pictures Studio and agreed to film a portion of the upcoming movie in Seoul,” Park said in his Facebook post.
Seoul is presently a popular location for Hollywood, with the Wachowski's upcoming Sense8 to be filmed in the city. Avengers 2 was also partially shot in Seoul earlier this year, with The Korea Observer reporting that the Korea elements of the film will make up 15 to 20 minutes of the run time.

Roberto Orci Beaming Off ‘Star Trek’ As Director
http://deadline.com/2014/12/star-tre...ci-1201311255/
EXCLUSIVE: Roberto Orci is beaming off the bridge of the Starship Enterprise on Star Trek 3. Rampant rumors are swirling and I’ve confirmed there is fire behind the smoke that he won’t be directing. I even hear that Edgar Wright and others are on a short list to take the job. Orci stays on the project as producer, I’ve heard.

I think Abrams worked well because his "style" is mostly just lens flare and competent direction, whereas Wright is a bit too adherent to his own devices, shots, etc. Wright's style of directing and cutting just wouldn't seem in line with what I'd expect here.
Duncan Jones would be an inspired choice, but he's busy at the moment.

I'm curious to know what Orci did or did not do to get himself ousted. Maybe he just realized that he was out of his element?
