Yeah, it's been established that in Star Trek that people no longer shit. They just beam the shit right out of their bodies.

I love how people think something very wrong has been done to the larger Trek franchise that wasn't done long before during both the Kirk and Picard movies. A few of those were just as shitty given what people are using as reasons for knocking these new movies.

Even the worst of the first 10 movies TRIED to be Trek beyond something superficial. These new ones are just using the brand name at this point and pale imitations of the original principals (especially Pegg).

I think they're longing for the original series and conveniently forgetting everything post Star Trek 4. The Next Generation movies were big dumb sci-fi movies, not some highbrow entertainment.

I agree other than I would point out that many episodes of those series were no better. People can dislike these new movies all the want, but they're going to get laughed at if they are going to use some manufactured quality level of the original series & movies to do that. There is plenty of crap at every level.

It all comes down to what people have decided they like and not like. Much like these newer sci-fi/comic franchises where one is crap because of some critique that is totally ignored in another because they have decided they like it.

There's unquestionably a very different tone to the Abrams Trek films though. Not really sure how a person can watch any of the shows or films that came before them and deny that. Whether that's a question of just what fans are used to or if there were bad episodes or films is a different matter entirely. Personally the new films to me just feel like Paramount decided to abandon most things that gave Star Trek its identity to appeal to a broader audience but wanted to keep the characters people know from pop culture around so they can still capitalize on the brand.

I don't think anybody would try and say there isn't a difference in tone. Just like each series and most of the movies had a different tone than those that came before them. Many (including me) would say that is a good thing. Just like there is an obvious difference to the look of these new movies.

Sounds like the DC comic movie threads.

I seriously didn't think it was possible to put out a worse trailer for a large budget movie than the last trailer Superman VS Batman released, but Paramount accomplished it with this horrid looking turd.

Lin talking about the trailer:

Well, its a minute and a half, you know… And again, there were other versions that were much more traditional and I can see where maybe the hardcore fans could probably see that as, “Oh.” But with trailers you’re putting a two-hour movie into a minute and a half, and the one thing I wanted to make sure is that it hopefully represents that we are trying to be bold and take risks, whether we are successful or not, I don’t know. That was something I was excited to do and with collaborators like Simon [Pegg] and Doug [Jung], passion for the franchise will be there regardless. So however it’s presented, yeah it’s a minute and a half, and my challenge to everyone making the trailer is about saying “let’s not go off course, I’m not afraid to share — share it, I feel like we have the goods in a two-hour run and you really do get to know the characters and hopefully the journey is great. I love it and the cast did an amazing job and the crew… and the inside baseball version of the creation of this Trek was pretty condensed in how you usually make a movie of this size. And I wanted us to be bold, I wanted us to take chances and hopefully in a minute and a half we are able to convey that.
and a lot more details about the film and the trailer here.

Yep, after reading all that I'm definitely out of this one.

The first reboot was ok at best. The last one was mediocre. This looks, and sounds, flat out terrible - like worst movie of the year terrible.

When I was growing up, I had a friend without a colon. All the other kids picked on him. Poor guy. He's probably a millionaire now.

That's actually a good sign - Sadly, the Paramount marketing people may be undermining the movie by trying to appeal to as wide an audience as possible. They really need to release a more classic Trek styled trailer asap.

considering they released the trailer right before Episode 7 I'd say they are definitely trying to appeal to the Star Wars audience.
