The Conjuring 2 (2016, D: James Wan) S: Patrick Wilson, Vera Farmiga

With “The Conjuring” looking like a sleeper hit, New Line is already working on bringing a sequel to life.
James Wan’s demonic possession thriller opens Friday in the wake of off-the-charts test screening results and strong reviews. Set in Rhode Island in 1971, the story is based on the work of real-life paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren — portrayed by Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga. Ron Livingston and Lili Taylor play father and mother of the five Perron girls who were terrorized by the haunted house.
“Horror is very much a part of the DNA of New Line — ‘Nightmare on Elm Street,’ ‘Friday the 13th,’ ‘The Rite,’ and the ‘Final Destination’ films,” notes New Line president Toby Emmerich. “This is as good a horror movie as we’ve ever made…. We think it will have great playability.”

Emmerich told Variety that New Line is exploring a potential franchise based on the Warrens’ investigations, which also involved cases that wound up as the movies “The Amityville Horror” and “The Haunting in Connecticut.” “We have Lorraine’s permission and support, and we are working on developing another film,” Emmerich said.
The team of Carey Hayes and Chad Hayes, who penned “The Conjuring,” are on board as writers for the sequel. The brothers interviewed Lorraine Warren extensively as part of developing the script.
Warner Bros. had originally dated “The Conjuring” for Jan. 25, but decided last fall to move it back to this summer as a result of the test screening results. Producers are Rob Cowan, Peter Safran and Tony DeRosa-Grund.

Considering The Conjuring had a $12m budget, I'm surprised they didn't make #2 before Wan started Fast and Furious 7 work.

Warner Bros. Pictures has announced a number of upcoming release dates today, including an October 23, 2015 release for their The Conjuring 2. They've also set the date of this October 3 for their spinoff of the original The Conjuring, formerly titled Annabelle.

I enjoyed the first one a lot so I'll see this no matter what. I am a bit concerned it's not going to be anywhere near as scary as the first. A lot of times horror movies lose the subtlety in the sequel when they try to out due the originals.

Trailer lacked that 'hand clap' moment that made the first one so effective... but I'm there for sure.

Loved the first one. Farmiga was the main attraction for me on that one. She's a solid actress. Wilson was an added layer to it. They were both good. Loved their relationship.

I can hardly think of more than a handful (if that) of horror films with on par sequels. Friday the 13th Part 2 maybe? It more or less felt like the same movie. I'm no hardcore horror fan by any means, but I don't remember many sequels (first ones, anyway) being very good.

I saw an advanced screening tonight. It's solid...not quite as good as the 1st (which I liked alot), but good enough to suggest checking it out if you're a fan of the original. There are plenty of jump scares, so it's a great movie to bring a girl to. The ones at my screening were screaming throughout. The demon nun is pretty creepy.
Again, it's nothing special, but it is a serviceable sequel and not a bad way to kill a couple hours.
