I had a great time with the 130 minutes cut. However, it seems the reason most casual viewers didn't like it is because there wasn't enough "meat" to the story. And even for someone like me, who had a blast watching the movie, it is obviously a valid complaint.

Alternate cut, extended cut, director's cut in name only, whatever you wanna call it. The film would benefit from a longer cut since casual viewers felt the story as presented was shallow and fans like myself would eat it up. It's a potential win-win (assuming the cut footage doesn't completely suck).

Saw it yesterday and really enjoyed it. I'm not so sure how much I'd like an extended cut, just because I feel like it was more the actors than their stories that seemed sort of generic, but I hope I'm wrong.

Saw it. Liked it. I thought most of the performances were pretty flat, even Elba, who is nearly flawless in everything i've seen him in.

this was my 1st 3d i've ever seen. i thought the 3d was pretty good. for those who have seen many 3d movies, how was it based on your experience with other movies? just curious since this was a new experience for me.

I thought the 3D was pretty good. On par with say Prometheus' 3D.

Which is impressive cuz it's a post conversion. Really wished I saw Titanic's PC.

Re: Pacific Rim (del Toro, 2013) — The Reviews Thread

I thought the 3D showed a great amount of depth for a post conversion. And not just the CGI sequences (which were rendered in 3D from the get go). I only recall two instances of crosstalk so I was quite impressed in that regard as well.

Since Snake just brought up Prometheus, I recently noticed that when David is watching Lawrence of Arabia, the footage of LOA is converted to 3D. And I don't mean that the screen he's watching it on is three dimensional but rather the footage of the film itself. It's even more apparent when there's an insert of LOA that takes the entire frame. The entire sequence was meticulously converted to 3D. It was quite an impressive little detail.

Put up an extended cut for pre-order, I will click now. Hopefully the studio will put it out first rather than later try to recoup on this movie, which is sadly not doing well. I will totally put my money down for that right now.

I would gladly pre-order a BD that features an extended cut as well.

I, however, would gladly pre-order a BD of a shorter cut, shorn of 30 minutes of character development. Since no actual characters were developed in it's 130 minutes, a 100 minute version would be a lean fun ride lacking only in something that never worked anyways.

Whoah what? I'm going to have to rent the 3D Blu just for this. And maybe Prometheus too, that slipped through my fingers last year.

And Snake, Titanic's PC was the shit.

I do think it's sort of funny that people want "character development" in a giant mech vs. giant monster flick. Where the fuck were you guys when those ATROCIOUS Transformers films came out? I'm still waiting for character development out of those 3 films. Puh-Lease!

It's a brief moment so the conversion is easily missed. I've watched Prometheus a few times and only recently noticed that the Lawrence Of Arabia footage was converted.

Prometheus also has 3D clips of Avatar, Titanic, and I, Robot. Although it's a conversion (and there's some very minor flat elements), the Titanic clip blew the Avatar clip right out of the water. It's a shame I never liked Titanic because that 3D conversion is pure eye candy. The I, Robot clip looked like shit, however.

Well, in all fairness, Del Toro promised the Anti-Bay of giant robot movies. And people do expect more from him than Bay. You go to a Bay movie for slick photography (albeit cut to ribbons given his frenetic editing style), huge explosions (his fans call them Baysplotions) and military fetishism.

He did but he backed off of what he may have spoken too early on. PR was what we were going to get BUT it was going be more. We fell in love with what was more.

I love PR. But as Rocshemp said, it was going to be more than just Jaeger vs. Kaiju.

No, what I expected were better fleshed out characters in a Guillermo del Toro movie.

Yeah, that's a perfect summery to the problem with this movie; I expect a movie like this from Stephen Sommers or McG, not del Toro; even though I've never held him in the most highest regards, I still like the fact that he seemingly plays things based on the film's need, not what will be expected.

This movie was full of awful cheesy moments and I can't believe they didn't see this thing becoming the parody that it is. Compare the cheesy President speech from Independence Day to this film's speech scene and with all of the former's faults, it actually feels ok even though it's obviously saccharine. I laughed at the fact that there were barely any workers around and immediately after Elba says for all to gather around, there's this huge group in front of him.

World War Z was better than this movie and I can't believe it.

People tore into the Transformers sequels here when they came out.

Or am I missing something?
