Re: Pacific Rim (del Toro, 2013) — The Reviews Thread
No, they needed it to make 50 million in China (at least) for them to supposedly consider a sequel. It made 9 million on its opening day there, which broke all kinds of records.
That opening in Japan is baffling but maybe they don't like their giant robot movies anymore? That sucks.

My theories on China and Japan:
China
1. The film featured a Chinese Hero team. (Good)
2. They are NOT the "Giant Robot" Asian culture. (not so good)
3. the film was mostly set in Chinese areas. (good)
Japan
1. This is an American made film and they still have "Godzilla 98" in their heads.
2. The film featured a Chinese Hero Team. (not good for them)
3. The film was mostly set in Chinese areas. (not good for them)

I'm surprised there isn't a China cut where they Chinese Jaeger comes back to life and emerges the hero. (or is there?!)

From Variety: ‘Pacific Rim’ Fails to Wow Japanese Audiences
More interesting than the article is this nugget from the comments section:
More interesting than the article is this nugget from the comments section:
I live in Japan and work at a University here, it’s a University of Technology, almost all male and almost all interested in robots/electronics and sci-fi movies (Gundam, pla-model etc.) However not one of my students had even heard of Pacific Rim before I told them about it, after showing them the trailer (Japanese Version) they showed some interest, but seriously nobody had heard of it at all. I live in a fairly rural prefecture but we still have a large population (around 800,000) and I didn’t see even one advertisement, poster or other piece of PR outside of the movie theater itself. I went on the opening night to the main movie theater in the prefecture and there were 8 people in the showing. So yeah maybe they covered Tokyo with their tour but it seems like the rest of Japan had no clue. I personally love the film and I really think it IS a great tribute to classic Japanese monster movies but if nobody knows it exists you can’t expect a big opening weekend. So I think whoever was doing PR has some questions to answer.
(World War Z by contrast had regular TV spots posters everywhere and yeah admittedly Brad Pitt can’t of hurt, but the difference in PR was not even close. Again I can only speak for my prefecture here.)

The more one reads, the more it seems like someone didn't want PR to do well and screwed it over by not doing enough advertising in the right places. Not selling this movie in Japan is insane.

Didn't WB have a nasty split with Legendary just as the film was due to be released? That could explain the crap marketing, since apparently Legendary owns the movie though WB did the distribution.

Not sure if anyone has mentioned this, but Rinko Kikuchi is actually quasi-hated on by Japanese people. There's an underlying sentiment of "she's okay....but she's not a real star" because she's made her fame in films outside of Japan.
Also, she's a "movie star" who, actually play second fiddle to TV stars in Japan. They're all about serialized TV dramas there.

I never knew she was disliked out there. I guess another reason might be that she doesn't have a voice that sounds like two chipmunks humping. The Japanese really love their women squeaky.

I can't help but wonder if the real reason she isn't much-liked is because she's made most of her fame in non-Japanese films, and they don't look very kindly on that. And I've heard rumors that some have looked down upon her for being in Babel, which apparently had her involved a sex scene which was somewhat explicit.

There was an article about her on a gaming site about this very thing when Pacific Rim came out -

This thread made me realize I've only scene her footage from those movies.
