Rented the BD last night and watched all 150+ minutes of it this afternoon.

I could not stand this movie. Really long, bloated, full of itself. Did not like Hammer as the Ranger and Depp as Tonto was like watching a bad caricature of American Indians. Hammer just wasn't the right guy IMO to play the character. He and Depp never gelled as partners. I never really agree with Patman's robotic reviews, but his comments are pretty spot on for what I thought. Who the hell at Disney and Bruckheimer's production company thought that making a big summer blockbuster about this character would be a hit?

I got to the 2 hour mark and saw there was still 30 minutes left and started to get annoyed. It was a chore to get through.

I gave it 2 stars just because of the set design, costumes and some decent action scenes. I would never re-visit this let alone buy the BD.

I can see how this movie was a major bomb for Disney and basically ended their relationship with Jerry Bruckheimer.

This movie has no idea what the hell it wants to be. Sometimes it's a slapstick comedy, sometimes a serious and gritty deconstruction with scenes so dark I'm surprised they're in a Disney film. One moment, Reed is smelling his hands after he gets dragged through horseshit, the next the villain is consuming a live human heart and committing genocide. As Bruckheimer movies always do, it has lots of actors who're way to good to be in the movie hamming it up. There's a whole political undertone that has no place in the film, and it's ungodly long. It's a truly focus-grouped movie which tries to please everyone and pleases no one. Monument Valley style shots in one scene, the next are full of CG. And Gore Verbinski, never one to used six shots to finish a scene when he can use 37. It's a mess, even more so than the POTC sequels, which at least had the goodwill of a first installment that wasn't terrible.

I saw this today and, much to my surprise, I enjoyed it a great deal. It's still long in the tooth (typical of Verbinski) but the only things I would have cut out is Helena Bohnam Carter and "Hell On Wheels" in their entirety. Neither serves any real purpose given that "Hell On Wheels" never leads to the traitor they were hunting for and the latter's Bohnam Carter's assist during the finale could have been carried out by Tonto or John respectively. The romance, given how threadbare and unresolved it is, could have also been excised.

The fractured narrative and everything else was fine by me.

Despite its faults, for a summer film, I enjoyed The Lone Ranger quite a bit. I still think it ranks as one of summer's better big releases, and I certainly enjoyed it much more than the dreadful Iron Man 3, the disappointing Star Trek Into Darkness, and the dull World War Z.

I watched it this past Friday. It's definitely bloated and honestly I didn't need an origin for the character let alone that awful framing narrative. The humor feels stilted and I loved the movie when it was playing things with a straight face. Hammer generally seemed confused whether to be serious or deadpan and Depp was doing Depp™

The final 40 minutes or so are the movie I'd have liked to have seen consistently in the preceding 110. It's a solid B in my book and one I'll try and revisit later knowing what to expect.

My wife and I both fell asleep trying to watch this thing over the weekend. Granted, it was late at night, and we probably shouldn't have started a 2 1/2 hr movie, but there wasn't a single reason it should have been this long and still turned out as sloppy as it did. And I can why Tarantino liked it. The borderline R rated Looney Tunes type violence is right up his alley. The movie definitely had entertaining bits, but could easily have 45 mins shaved off it's running time. Curious to see what the first version of the movie would have turned out to be. Because if this was a second effort, someone needs to be fired.

Count me in with everyone who doesn't understand the lambasting this film got. I enjoyed the heck out of it. I'd say its better than any of the Pirates sequels. The only major disappointment was watching how they set it up so perfectly for a sequel knowing its a sequel that will never come.

Its also pretty interesting for the fact that its a mainstream Cowboys and Indians western shoot em up with the "Indians" as the protagonists. I'm not sure thats been done before. I know a lot of films have dealt seriously with the subject matter in more dramatic features. But I can't think of many cowboys and indians B pictures where the Indians are the heroes.

I liked the 2 Pirates movies after the third, mostly because they're both a lot shorter and fairly entertaining.

I dunno, I liked Lone Ranger. But it's one of those "why did this need to be made" ones. Sure, most of it was fun, but I never expected or wanted to see anymore of it when it was over. With that in mind, I think Depp just took himself out of any viable franchise now, especially Disney. I'm wondering if they're still going to have him in the Fantastic Beasts franchise any more.
