Amazing Spider-Man IV (5/4/2018) - news, rumors, cast..
More to steal away prime real estate release dates than anything else...
Be interesting to see which franchises will tire first with audiences.

Studio's crown jewel franchise will have three installments through 2018
With Disney and Fox already laying claim to primo release dates far in advance, Sony has decided to join the dating game, with the next two “Spider-Man” installments set to bow June 10, 2016 and May 4, 2018.
Production on “The Amazing Spider-Man 2 ” already is underway in New York. Pic is slated to open May 2, 2014.

“Spider-Man is our most important, most successful, and most beloved franchise, so we’re thrilled that we are in a position to lock in these prime release dates over the next five years,” said Jeff Blake, Sony’s worldwide marketing and distribution chief.
The June berth will be only the second time a “Spider-Man” film has bowed that month after “Spider-Man 2″ scored an $88 million domestic opening in 2004. Sony went with the June date because Disney already laid claim to the first weekend in May 2016 with an untitled Marvel film.
Sony likely jumped on the May 4-6, 2018 weekend before any other studio (ahem, Disney) nabs the date.
The studio’s first “Spider-Man” reboot launched Fourth of July weekend last year, earning $137 million in its first six days domestically. The film, from helmer Marc Webb (who’s returning to direct the sequel), wound up grossing a substantial $750 million worldwide.

I'm glad I can plan to be underwhelmed by the third sequel before they release the first sequel to the underwhelming reboot of the first franchise.

It is kind of disheartening to see studios stake out release so far in advance.
Also, it is really disheartening to think of a 3rd sequel to The Amazing Spider-Man.

Marc Webb Will Not Direct Franchise After ‘Amazing Spider-Man 3′
March 17, 2014 | 04:49PM PT
It looks like Marc Webb is ready to leave the Spidey universe.
Webb, who helped relaunch the franchise in 2012 after Sam Raimi’s trilogy starring Tobey Maguire, told The Daily Beast that he won’t return to direct any more movies after the third installment. That means there’s at least one more “Amazing Spider-Man” movie that he won’t helm. However, he’s interested in consulting Sony’s upcoming Spidey pics.
“I’d like to be involved as a consultant,” he recently told The Daily Beast. “I’ve already talked to these guys about it, but in terms of directing it, that will close out my tenure. I’ve had so much fun doing it, but after the third movie, it’ll be the time to find something else.”
Sony recently announced plans for two follow-ups “Amazing Spider-Man 3″ and “4″ slated for 2016 and 2018 focused on the villains Venom and The Sinister Six.
Webb follows in the footsteps of “Avengers” director Joss Whedon, who’s consulted on other Marvel Studios films. He even shot bonus scenes for next month’s “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” and 2011′s “Thor.” “X-Men” director Bryan Singer directed the first two films and produced “X-Men: First Class” before returning to the director’s chair this summer’s “Days of Future Past.”
“The Amazing Spider-Man 2,” starring Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone, bows May 2.

If Spider-Man is Sony's "most important" franchise, I guess I don't have to worry about paying too much attention to their releases until at least 2018.

I liked Marc Webb's directorial debut, (500) Days of Summer but I honestly don't feel like he brought anything special to the table with The Amazing Spider-Man and the sequel doesn't look that much better so I don't think it's a big loss.

As bad as ASM was, and as even worse as ASM 2 will be, both are masterpieces of the highest order compared to 500 Days of Summer.

I didn't enjoy it a lot the first time I saw it but it's grown on me with repeat viewings. Then again I really enjoy both JGL and Zooey Deschanel so they made the movie for me.

Is Sony obliged to release a Spider-Man film every other year like Fox is with the X-Men just to keep the franchise from falling back under the control of Marvel Films? Because if so, that's a really shitty reason to churn out unnecessary sequels at an alarming and unwanted pace and it makes movie studios look even more greedy than they really are (which is seriously hard to do).

[future thread posts] Damn. Amazing Spiderman 3 sucked so much ass, no way in hell will I spend a dime to see another one of those. Add to the whole Andrew Garfield maybe killed his neighboor controversy. Also, who the fuck though it was a good idea to cast Justin Beiber as J Johna Jameson's son????????? [/future thread posts]

Sony May Move 'Amazing Spider-Man 4' Release Date
11:02 AM PDT 4/10/2014 by Graeme McMillan
Producer Matt Tolmach suggests that the previously-announced 2018 slot may go to "Sinister Six" or "Venom" instead of "Amazing Spider-Man 4."
With the release of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 still weeks away, it might seem a little early to talk about the fourth movie in the current Spider-Man movie series. And yet, that’s what producer Matt Tolmach is doing, suggesting that we won’t see the ASM4 when we expected.
Sony had previously given May 4, 2018, as the projected release date for The Amazing Spider-Man 4, but in conversation with the Den of Geek website, Tolmach said that things may still be in flux in that regard.
“Before we know what we do with Spider-Man 4, we're going to do Sinister Six, Venom and Spider-Man 3. There is going to be a lot of crossover in those movies,” he said. “So we're just not at Spider-Man 4, because we still have a whole other Spider-Man movie and two other movies. So we don't know yet what [Spider-Man 4] is going to be.”
The website confirmed with Tolmach that the May 2018 date has been reserved for a movie in the Spider-Man franchise, but not necessarily Amazing Spider-Man 4. Drew Goddard was recently named as the director for Sinister Six, following the December announcement of his writing the spin-off.

Better than DC at least... DC doesn't know what they're doing tomorrow let alone a year from now.
Marvel doesn't really have detailed plans either. The whole 2028 thing is a rough outline at best. Like they may have a rough idea for a GOTG sequel in 2018 or something, but that can certainly change if GOTG flops.
