How about Payback? The directors cut is awful.

Gotta disagree with that one. The added (and extended) scenes were all character stuff that made the movie more human and less robotic. The movie badly needed those moments.

With Mel Gibson? I disagree. The "Straight Up" Edition is what was supposed to come out originally until studio decided otherwise. Now it's even more raw and violent. I can never watch the theatrical edition of Payback again. Even the color palette of the straight up edition gives it a more noir-ish look.

JFK. The majority of the re-inserted scenes don't hurt the film. However, there's a new scene where Kevin Costner mentions "our friend, Clay Shaw" before Clay Shaw is introduced to Costner and Co. in the story. That's just sloppy.

Unfortunately, the theatrical cut has never been released on DVD or Blu ray. However, you *can* get it off iTunes. Go figure.

Be grateful for studio interference with the director's vision, or that's all we would have ever had. Jesus, I'm still pissed that DC exists, and that people watch it and think that is what the Warriors is when I talk about the movie.

I'm not all that frustrated that that version of the film exists, but I am extremely annoyed that he Lucased it and won't release the original. I didn't even know about it, and my friend rented the DC and couldn't get past that stuff.

I can't watch the DC at all. Once was enough and it killed me.

Great call!!
I bought the dvd of the new cut and didn't like it. Except they did use normal colors on the new cut instead of using ice looking teal color like they did on the original.

More boring minutes this movie doesn't need.

Explain about the new dream sequence.

Re: What extended cut of a movie did you think made it worse?

I don't like the director's cut of Tombstone. The film was perfect as it was but with the DC
Spoiler:
you get u useless scene of Doc Holiday drunk when the Earps are getting attacked, and another Holliday scene which gives away the later surprise of Wyatt's revenge campaign.

Aliens DC, despite the Hadley's Hope scene, which I always skip, is better with the added Ripley backstory.

T2 DC is not better. The only good addition was the exceptionally good scene of John and Sarah reprogramming the T-800. It made sense that Sarah would want to destroy the terminator after what she went through. It was also a much better explanation of the T-800's personality.

Spoiler:
turns it into a very generic "war is bad" movie. The original ending was different sort of first contact story that had a more subtle criticism of war by showing Coffee's breakdown and insistence on destruction. Now it gives a totally one-dimensional depiction of war. On top of that, I think the first contact is sullied since the aliens threatened the world as well. I can't imagine an easy peace with them afterwards, which was implied in the theatrical cut.
Yeah, looking back, I have to agree...
Spoiler:
Back when the DC of The Abyss first was released on video many years ago, I completely embraced it and for a long time thought it was the better version of the movie because it was bigger in scope and made how the events in the movie played out underwater end up saving the world.

But now looking back, the way the DC unfolds is too sloppy (using too much hokey TV news footage for the ending in the DC) and it transformed the Non-Terrestrial Intelligence (NTI's) from peaceful and friendly into a major thread that is inconsistent with their more inquisitive encounters throughout the earlier parts of the movie. Yeah, it is a bigger ending that's kind of like "The Day The Earth Stood Still" in the DC, but the poor execution and inconsistency with the earlier parts of the movie has shifted me back to preferring the Theatrical Cut.

I wouldn't classify it as an Extended Cut. It's the TV version, meaning certain things were cut out that would be deemed "inappropriate" for television so alternate scenes were shot and extra scenes added to pad run time. A lot of films from the 80s and 90s are guilty of this.
