Re: What extended cut of a movie did you think made it worse?

It seems like the majority extended cuts are worse.

Robocop (I caught hell about this one in another thread)
Star Trek II
Star Trek VI
Almost all comedies
Dances With Wolves
Apocalypse Now Redux

Cinema Paradiso
I thought it was much stronger to never know what happened to his first girlfriend.

Terminator 2. The excess footage killed the plot's momentum.

I'll go the opposite and say that the butchered theatrical cut of "Malena" was an abomination compared to the foreign director's cut.

The "Special Longer Version" ? (which I think is the same extended version that was broadcast on TV back in the '80s)

Or the "Director's Edition" ? (this is the version on DVD only)

I've yet to see the first film in either cut, but am fascinated by the comparisons to 2001. Star Trek meets 2001 is a neat concept. I'll rent it someday.

I'll third this one. I wish I'd never have watched the director's cut.

The full version of Robocop amounts to very little, I think it's only seconds, maybe a full minute. I like I because it's what Verhoeven wanted originally, but you can still get both cuts. Though frankly, Verhoeven is a sick man anyway and the film was sort of violent enough.

James Cameron thinks so too, that's why he cut it. The theatrical cut is his preferred version. Though I'm glad he put his money where his mouth is and lets the audience see multiple cuts to decide for themselves. Is there an anamorphic version of The Abyss anywhere?

this was a victim of the MPAA and the director's cut is more per se a complete unrated cut of the film.

that was the ultimate point of the film, it's highly violent and when the blood flows Verhoeven let's it fly... interestingly one of the shots that was reinstated that isn't violent, but an interesting over head shot of the 'dead' Murphy (curious why that shot was excised).

Disagree with the whole LOTR trilogy being made worse. I think FOTR benefited from the EEs. The problem is that the other two only have certain scenes that really add to it. I feel that with ROTK they should have only kept Saruman's bit. Aragorn getting the Dead Army to fight for him earlier eliminates all of the suspense for later.

Alien. Though the "cocooned Dallas" scene is interesting in itself, its placement in the DC completely kills the narrative drive of the Nostromo's final minutes.

Agree about ROTK, but I feel that both FOTR and TTT benefit immensely from their Extended Cuts.

of the three films The Two Towers I felt benefitted greatly with the additional scenes.

Re: What extended cut of a movie did you think made it worse?

The first that comes to mind for me is Deep Red. The 98-minute version is Argento's best film, in my opinion, whereas the 126-minute version released on DVD just adds 30 minutes of lighthearted banter and romance incongruent with the rest of the film.

Miami Vice. It's billed as a director's cut but Mann mentions it's only an extended/experimental cut. I preferred the more expedient theatrical cut and didn't care for the new boat race opening or the use of the "In The Air Tonight" cover in the film proper.

The most guiling part is that he went Lucas and hasn't released the original cut on Blu-Ray.

Re: What extended cut of a movie did you think made it worse?

Amadeus. Technically a director's cut, but it still sucks. Can we PLEASE get the theatrical cut on Blu ray? Maybe for the film's 30th Anniversary next year?

The additional scenes were great up untill the bonus ending when Merry & Pippin are farting around in the water. The theatrical cut ended perfectly on Sam's speech.

I bought that Director's Cut thinking it would add footage previously cut from the movie, I was appalled when I saw all the cartoon crap. Quickly bought the original version on Ebay and sold that DC travesty.

I was thinking it was going to incorporate the scenes that were added to the TV version when it first aired.
