Movies that were so highly anticipated that they were bound to be a disappointment?

What movies were so highly anticipated and received so much pre-release hype that when the actual movie itself was released it was nearly impossible for it to live up to everyone's expectations and, as a result, was considered a disappointment? To clarify, I mean movies, that when judged on their own merits, are actually pretty good, but people just had unrealistically high expectations for the movie when it was first released, and somewhat unfairly, labeled the movie a disappointment.

I think the most obvious answer in the past fifteen years or so has to be The Phantom Menace, although that doesn't really fit in with your description.

Prometheus also comes to mind.

The Phantom Menace fits for me. I think it's not that bad and to me it's on par with the previously released ones(except Empire Strikes back, which is in it's own level of greatness). Looking at it now, of course it was derided because Star Wars' fans had grown up but Star Wars had not. The level of anticipation caused so much of the hatred this movie gets. I wish that level of hatred were leveled on Attack of the Clones, a horrible movie.

I think The Dark Knight Rises was the last movie I went into expecting something amazing and just didn't get it. It wasn't a bad movie by any means, but it wasn't The Dark Knight.

Also the Matrix Reloaded

I don't remember many details, but as a teen I remember being ecstatic about The Lost World: Jurassic Park's release, and being hugely let down.

Should I save this space for Avengers 2?

Word of mouth hype for The Shining put it into this category for me.

"Iron Man 3" was way overhyped, and while I enjoyed it, a certain plot twist really let me down. I actually like "Green Lantern", though the extended cut is pointless.

The Matrix sequels, obviously. They turned out mediocre anyway, but so many people were expecting a new trilogy on par with Star Wars or Indiana Jones.

I think that's more personal opinion. I don't remember anyone looking forward to Revolutions based off of the disappointment that people felt Reloaded was. I think it had left a sour taste in most peoples mouths.

I actually went to see Revolutions thinking that they left all the good stuff for last and that Reloaded was mostly filler to stretch out the story/franchise. Boy was I wrong.

The Passion of the Christ disappointed. Lacked the violence that was promised.

I'm on the other side.

Eyes Wide Shut = One of Kubrick's best films
A.I. = One of Spielberg's best films
