Re: Birdman (2014) D: Iñárritu S: Stone, Norton, Galifinakis, Watts, Keaton

I wonder how Keaton got the role. I wonder if he auditioned for the part. He must have at least read for it. All the actors around him in the film are kind of "hot" actors right now. Zach Galifinakis, Emma Stone. Even Edward Norton and Naomi Watts must be seen as "bankable" actors. Keaton's lead roles are few and far between these days, and nothing as high profile as this. I'm just interested to know how he ended up in the role. Maybe Inarritu saw a parallel between Keaton and the Birdman character because of Keaton playing Batman back in the day. It just seems like left field casting that probably didn't go over super well with investors. It reminds me of Rourke being cast in the Wrestler. It would be great if Keaton got an Oscar nod out of this. Anyways im stoked he's in it and im stoked for the film overall.

I liked the original trailer and was psyched to see this. The international trailer is so good I might drive a good distance to see this if it's not playing near me.

I think this is it. In the trailer there is a part where he says that he turned down Birdman IV. From what I know Keaton turned down a shitload of money to continue doing the Batman films because he did not like the direction in which they were headed. Art imitating life.

Like Kurt Russell, Keaton is super awesome and doesn't work nearly enough to give me my fill.

While it's not the reliable site it once was, Deadline is reporting this got an excellent response at Venice:

http://deadline.com/2014/08/venice-o...-video-825463/

6 out of 6 positive reviews on rottentomatoes with a 10/10 average.

http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/birdman_2014/

"There are streaks of 42nd Street, The Producers and Sunset Boulevard here, but otherwise, Birdman isn't much like anything else at all. Think Black Swan directed by Mel Brooks and you're in the vicinity, but only just."

That sounds fucking incredible

Re: Birdman (2014) D: Iñárritu S: Keaton, Stone, Norton, Galifinakis, Watts

This is getting good.

"Hubristic and humble and heartfelt and hotheaded, let’s get straight to it: “Birdman” is a phenomenal film. The feverishly anticipated (not least by us) new movie from Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu blasted through its Venice premiere (it’s the opening film) in a giddy, gonzo rush--so exciting, so moment-to-moment enjoyable that to expect profundity would be greedy. And yet it delivers on that level too; it is as thoughtful and smart as it is infectiously absurd. That, perhaps is the biggest surprise of an endlessly surprising, inventive film: whatever the sum of its chatter-worthy elements, like how it basically launches and completes the “Keatonnaissance” in one fell swoop, or the incredible camerawork that is imperceptibly stitched together into (mostly) one long seamless, cutless take, “Birdman” adds up to more. It’s borderline miraculous."

The Playlist

"A quarter-century after “Batman” ushered in the era of Hollywood mega-tentpoles — hollow comicbook pictures manufactured to enthrall teens and hustle merch — a penitent Michael Keaton returns with the comeback of the century, “Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance),” a blisteringly hot-blooded, defiantly anti-formulaic look at a has-been movie star’s attempts to resuscitate his career by mounting a vanity project on Broadway. In a year overloaded with self-aware showbiz satires, Alejandro G. Inarritu’s fifth and best feature provides the delirious coup de grace — a triumph on every creative level, from casting to execution, that will electrify the industry, captivate arthouse and megaplex crowds alike, send awards pundits into orbit and give fresh wings to Keaton’s career."

Re: Birdman (2014) D: Iñárritu; S: Keaton, Stone, Norton, Galifinakis, Watts

There is a scene where Keaton, dressed as Birdman backstage in his dressing room, is watching Robert Downey Jr. on a small tv walking down the Red Carpet before Keaton goes into a profanity-laden monologue on how an Iron-Man vs. Birdman fight would really go down. Just read that from one of the rave reviews now popping up on Twitter.

I have to see this movie now

Warning to those who have never seen an Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu film :

This is not, I repeat not a superhero film.

I think that should be fairly obvious from watching the trailer. It looks pretty heavy handed and more like a drama than anything.

Unless they cut a trailer that I haven't seen. There is no grand tone in it to suggest it's in the genre.

Yeah, I'm not sure how the trailers would make anyone think differently. Looks like a great drama.

The funny thing is they could probably cut together a dishonest trailer to fool people into thinking this is a big superhero movie and they would probably get a decent opening.

Yeah Keaton really is a good actor. Hopefully this film serves as somewhat of a revival for his career and we get some more movies out of him.

I blame Tim Burton for trading in Keaton for Johnny Depp.

I'm glad Keaton didn't continue working with Burton though. Burton's output has been shitty for a long time and honestly Depp is overrated in my opinion.

If you haven't seen it yet check out The Art of the Steal on Netflix. Kurt Russell is fantastic in it!

Not that was he was necessarily bad in it, but it was a pretty lame movie.

I remember enjoying Sky High for what it was. Been years since I've seen it though.
