Love him or hate him it can not be denied that he is one of the greatest living directors. So many good ones I myself can't decide.

Oh, I'm sure people will deny it. I went with Melancholia, but Antichrist and Breaking the Waves are certainly strong contenders. I'd also like to give honorable mention to The Kingdom, his excellent TV show from the '90s (which was remade into Kingdom Hospital in America).

Re: Best film directed by Lars Von Trier
This is a hard one. It's between Breaking the Waves, Dancer in the Dark and Dogville. I can't decide. I haven't seen Medea or Melancholia yet.
edit: Okay, it's between Breaking the Waves and Dancer in the Dark. Almost there.

His masterpieces are Breaking the Waves, Dancer in the Dark and Dogville.
And I'd probably list them like that from best to best. All are on par with one another.

Re: Best film directed by Lars Von Trier
I think Dancer in the Dark is his best film. I loved what he was able to do with digital camcorders. It's amazing, and the editing in the film is incredible. That it's a musical, and such a depressing one, just makes it seem as if it shouldn't work, but it does. I've loved Bjork as a singer since her start with the Sugarcubes, not so much now, and I thought she was brilliant. She didn't win at Cannes for nuttin'. The other actors were great too. Like "Everyone Says I Love You", I think this film came out before the trend of having actors sing in the spectacular revival of musicals in film, i.e., Moulin Rouge, Chicago, etc, so having everyone sing/dance their parts in a Von Trier film was amazing to me.
I just loved it
