American Pie vs. American Beauty vs. American Psycho
Because they're all so similar!
Honestly though, they all have very distinct, often comedic visions of american life - the teenage virginity/first love storyline, the vapid and boring existence of suburbia, and the yuppie business man of the 80s (and frankly still existent metrosexual business men everywhere, they just don't stand out as much anymore.) This is derived from a very unusual American Pie vs. American Beauty convo in another thread. My vote is American Psycho. |

Shit that was 1998 and should count. Dammit.
Edit: Actually, these three were all more comedic, so sure why not, they work. |

That's for the Born on the 4th of July vs. Independence Day vs. Jaws vs. Live Free or Die Hard thread.

Re: American Pie vs. American Beauty vs. American Psycho
Whats the question? are we suppose to pick our favorite "American" movie?
|
Re: American Pie vs. American Beauty vs. American Psycho
Pick one of the three and explain why. It's like a middle school writing assignment for analysis by your peers.
Or in a less condescending tone - they're loosely similar in that they convey 3 different segments of life, 1. when you're growing up and everything is new and exciting, 2. when you're married and bored, and 3. when you're a self-obsessed psychopathic serial killer. Phases we will likely all go through. |
I need this thread like I need an asshole on my elbow!

Anyway, I like Amercan Psycho, but since I watched it right after Rules of Attraction, I think my expectations of it were skewed. I think at very interesting satirical take on rampant excess. I've never been much for American Beauty, but I was too young to "get it" when I first saw it. Retrospectively, I think it's also an interesting satirical take, but I don't think it has the guts. Well, you mean money and suburbia aren't the answers to all of life's problems?! Outdated 60s existentialism doesn't work? Well color me surprised! I like the more cutting and fung parts, but I think the dramatic side is a bit obvious and falls a little short. My limited life experience and conservative high school years don't make me very qualified to critique American Pie, plus I don't think I've ever seen it uncut, but I think it's blend of raunch and sentiment predates a lot of the Apatow stuff that became popular recently, and Stifler has turned out to be an enduring character, for better or worse. |

I like that movie, OK? At least you can actually tell what's going on i the fight scenes, that's more than can be said for many action movies today.
