Iron Man 3 to become first film to play in 4DX format in Japan

TOKYO -- Iron Man 3 will be shown starting April 26 in 4DX at a theater in Nagoya, central Japan, operated by the Korona World chain, which plans to screen 12 titles a year using the new format.

"Fourth dimension" effects utilized by the system include strobe lights and equipment in the ceiling that can drop bubbles down upon the audience, who will pay a $13 (1,300 yen) premium for 3D versions and $10 for 2D films, on top of the regular ticket price. Average admission price in Japan in 2012 was $12.50.

“It was really a matter of timing that Iron Man became the first title for 4DX in Japan, though we were looking for a blockbuster action film, as that is what works best with the system,” Tagiki Ishiguro, a spokesperson for Korona World, told The Hollywood Reporter.

The 4DX system already is in use in theaters in China, South Korea, Thailand, Russia, Mexico, Israel and several countries in South America. The first film to be shown in the format was Avatar in 2009 in Seoul, where the company behind the system, CJ Group, is headquartered.

“The programming for the various effects is done in advance by CJ,” noted Ishiguro, who said that Korona World is negotiating with Hollywood and Japanese studios on the next 4DX releases.

CJ Group is reported to be moving ahead with plans to bring 4DX to the U.S. this year, with a view to equipping 200 theaters over the coming five years.

I can't wait for the "falling bubbles" sequence in Iron Man 3!

I'm sure a lot of directors will love their artistic vision supplemented by bubbles and strobe lights.

Poor fools all of you, do not know the power bubbles and strobe lights hold to this day.

How is it the first film to be shown in 4DX if it has been in use since 2009? :hscratch:

He left out "in Japan" from the original headline. I just added it.

Isn't it against forum rules to self advertize, GoldenJCJ of the CJ Group?

Thanks for clearing that up because the first thing that came to mind was that this had already been done with the foreign theatrical run of Avatar.

Either way, this sounds ridiculous and no match for Feel Around: the ultimate sensorial experience.

It's like seeing those short 3D movies at the amusement parks. Too much of good thing.

Emergo was a "process" used in House on Haunted Hill. It consisted of a skeleton on a rope that flew over the audience at a certain moment. Possibly the chessiest of William Castle's gimicks.

I've been to a few movies where I wished a fog would roll in and obscure what I was watching on screen, but I doubt Iron Man 3 will be one of them.

I would actually love to see House on Haunted Hill in this process. I remember reading about the skeleton flying over the audience and thought what a hoot that would be in a packed audience.

Cheesier than Percepto ?

For those who are blissfully unaware, Percepto was another Castle gimmick, used in The Tingler (also released in 1959). Electric buzzers were installed under random theater seats, and at a predetermined moment they would be activated by the projectionist to signal the arrival of the monster under peoples' seats. This was accompanied by a fake "breakage" of the film, turning off all the theater lights, and the urging of Vincent Price to "scream for your lives!"

My local IMAX theater (Jordan's IMAX in Natick, MA) has "butt-kicking" seats, I assume they're similar to D-Box tech. Whatever they are, they work really well.

What, this technology was not employed for 25th Anniversary of Goonies?!?!

But the worst thing I ever done — I mixed a pot of fake puke at home and then I went to this movie theater, hid the puke in my jacket, climbed up to the balcony and then, then, I made a noise like this: hua-hua-hua-huaaaaaaa — and then I dumped it over the side, all over the people in the audience. And then, this was horrible, all the people started getting sick and throwing up all over each other.

That I'm familiar with. But I never heard of Emergo.

I knew of the skeleton gimmick, but I never knew the name until Mabuse posted it.

Well, this is certainly perfect for Iron Man 3. What foresight Stan Lee had to create a character with an advanced cybernetic suit that shoots streams of bubbles at his enemies!

We could have a huge debate as to the cheesiest William Castle gimmick. I'm partial to the "Shock Sections" myself. Because I know that when I jump out of my seat, I always wish that I was wearing a seat belt.
