That's the first I've heard of it called that. It's more of a campy, monster/sci-fi movie than anything. Galaxy Quest is close, though. There are funny moments in it, but I wouldn't call it a comedy. Princess Bride ? Again, there are funny moments, but I wouldn't call it a comedy. I don't see how Bad News Bears is a comedy...unless you're referring to the original movie.

And there are a lot of movies listed that I've never heard of, so I can't say one way or another.
Ferris Bueller is a comedy about teens. The Big Lebowski is an artsy comedy about bowlers. Ghostbusters is a comedy/horror hybrid. Galaxy Quest is clearly a comedy, a full-on parody of Star Trek, etc.

Desperate Living
Happiness
A New Leaf
The Jerk
Ruthless People
Ishtar
Clue
Freeway
Death Becomes Her
The War of the Roses
Beetlejuice
Heathers

This was hard. I'll cheat & go for a baker's dozen and toss in Arizona Dream. The dinner sequence with Faye Dunaway and Lili Taylor is one of the funniest things ever put on film. Sometimes I just put it in and watch that scene a few times over. The montages of Depp and Dunaway trying to fly are a hoot, too.

I'd be curious as to what you DO consider a comedy.

That's interesting considering all the movies you mentioned that supposedly aren't comedies (Ghostbusters, Ferris Bueller, Big Lebowski, Galaxy Quest) set out to do exactly that. They aren't dramas that just happened to have funny moments, they are supposed to be funny... and are.

THOSE are comedies...
I disagree. A perfect example is a movie like 48 Hours. The movie has a good cop story, but it is funny as hell. It isn't a silly movie, but that doesn't mean it can't be considered a comedy.

Another movie is Midnight Run. The movie has a good story, has some good dramatic moments (when Deniro goes to see his ex-wife), yet the movie is just funny from the beginning and the laughs never stop.

There are silly movies like Dumb and Dumber and Blazing Saddles and then there are movies that have alittle more to them like Fletch and Ghostbusters, but in the end they are all funny and are all comedies.

"Shaun of the Dead"/"Hot Fuzz" (tie for first)
"Anchorman"
"Sixteen Candles"
"Vacation"
"Office Space"
"Team America"
"Bad Santa"
"Election"
"Uncle Buck"
"Tootsie"

"About a Boy" and "In Bruges" would be in my Top 10, but they are comedy/dramas......no?

Re: Your TOP 10 COMEDIES of all time ...

I don't know if I even have a top-10 of comedies, as it's not a genre I particularly like or make an effort to explore. However, Love and Death is easily my #1.

1. Love and Death (1975)
-The Out-of-Towners (1970)
-After Hours (1985)
-The Dinner Game (1998)
-Bananas (1971)
-Up in Smoke (1978)
-Going Places (1974)
-The President's Analyst (1967)
-Sleeper (1973)
-Tatie Danielle (1990)

You're the first person I've seen call 48 Hours a comedy. Don't get me wrong. 48 Hours is one of my favourite movies from the 80s, but I've never thought of it as a comedy. Of course, it has some funny moments in it, but it's no more a comedy than Lethal Weapon....at least the first one.

Wikipedia calls it a buddy cop action film. Which is also how I would describe 48 Hours. Beverly Hills Cop, though it has a lot of comedic moments, is more of an action movie. The second two, though, I would consider comedies.

And enough of the Criterion Good Burger stuff. It's never been funny.

48 Hours I can see not being considered a comedy, but Beverly Hills Cop?

Beverly Hills Cop has funny moments, to be sure. But it doesn't present it's self as a full fledged comedy.

And Jules, Ghostbusters is more of a scifi buddy movie than a comedy. It's one of my favourite movies and I watch it all the time. But I've never thought of it as a comedy. Like Beverly Hills Cop, it has funny moments, but, to me, it has more than enough serious moments to keep it from being a straight comedy.

Ghostbusters has always been billed as a comedy.

As has Beverly Hills Cop.

Happy to see Arsenic and Old Lace show up on a few other people's list.

I've often wondered what it would have been like if Boris Karloff had played the role of Johnathan. I read that the producers of the Broadway show didn't want to let him take a break from the show to do the movie (even though Josephine Hull did). Then years later, my local radio station started playing old radio shows late at night, and one evening it was the radio adaptation of Arsenic and Old Lace with the Broadway cast, including Karloff as Jonathan! So I finally got a chance to "see" him do the role.

I don't like to pile on people, but I don't see how you can claim Ghostbusters isn't first and foremost a comedy. The premise, the characters, and the tone is all aiming for laughs. Yes there are many shifts in tone, a few genuinely creepy moments like the great scene between Ray and Winston where they talk about the end of the world, but these scenes are mightily outnumbered by all the weiner gobbling ghosts, and marshmellow monsters, and dickless EAP men, and ambushed hotel maids, and accountants dancing to DISCO INFERNO...

Re: Your TOP 10 COMEDIES of all time ...

I can't imagine ever enjoying any comedy or humorous film more than:

Monty Python and the Holy Grail

The first 90% of the film is just one perfect scene after another. And while I'm sure I would come up with a different list even later today as things come to mind; here is the rest of my top ten.

2 - Airplane!
3 - It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World
4 - Scrooged
5 - O Brother Where Art Thou?
6 - Free Enterprise
7 - Chasing Amy
8 - A Fish Called Wanda
9 - Clerks
10 - one of the Pink Panther films

Re: Your TOP 10 COMEDIES of all time ...

I cannot be bothered to actually list a top ten, but here are some likely contenders.

A Fish Called Wanda
Monty Python's The Meaning of Life (with all the love that Holy Grail gets, this is still easily my favorite)
Planes, Trains and Automobiles (which I consider to be one of the great American films, actually)
Ghostbusters
Airplane!
Shaun of the Dead
The Big Lebowski
Midnight Run (probably my #1)
Death at a Funeral (just saw this one recently, hilarious)

To stretch the definition of comedy slightly, I would add In the Loop.

To stretch it even more, I would add Sideways.

Guilty pleasure choice, Kids in the Hall: Brain Candy.

???????

The movie stars Bill Murray(From SNL), Dan Akroyd(From SNL), Harold Ramis(Directed Caddyshack), and Rick Moranis(SCTV), and was directed by Ivan Reitman(Directed Stripes). These were comedy heavyweights of that time period, how can you say this isn't a comedy?

Are you telling me people were going to the theaters in 1984 to see a good old sci-fi film? I remember that summer many of my friends saw it before me and all loved it because it was hilareous and they said it was one of the funniest movies they had ever seen.

AFI classifies BEVERLY HILLS COP (and GHOSTBUSTERS and FARGO too for that matter) as comedies - that's good enough for me.

No particular order:

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
Dr Strangelove
Big Lebowski
Bad News Bears (Original)
Slap Shot
Black Dynamite
Clerks
Four Lions
Snatch
Dazed and Confused

Almost squeezed in: Tarantino's part of Four Rooms

You are the only one I've ever heard claim that BHC, Ghostbusters, etc. aren't comedies, and that's including the filmmakers!

When I hear "Comedy", I think of stuff like Three Stooges, Tommy Boy, and Ernest Goes To Camp. BHC and Ghostbusters aren't STRICTLY comedies. I guess Ghostbusters could be called sci-fi comedy. And BHC could be called Drama/Action Comedy.
